About this role

Description

The Circulation Attendant performs a variety of patron contact duties, including greeting visitors; assisting patrons in finding materials; helping patrons with computers, copiers, and printers; assisting patrons with cell phones, laptops, and tablets; shelving materials in the appropriate location; performing all circulation duties; shelving library materials; maintaining displays. The Circulation Attendant is usually the first point of contact for patrons and must exhibit excellent customer service while performing all work duties. The work schedule includes evenings and Saturday hours. This is a part-time position with a maximum of 19 hours per week. Saturday availability is required.


Essential Job Functions

The Circulation Attendant must be able to perform the following essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodations.

  1. Put library materials in their correct location based upon the Dewey Decimal System for nonfiction items and an alphabetical system for fictional materials
  2. Greet library patrons and assist at the circulation service desk
  3. Assists with answering routine and basic reference questions in person and on the phone
  4. Maintains the accuracy and security of the cash drawer, processes sales/fines, and reconciles drawer
  5. Assists patrons with technology needs, including computer help, cellphone and tablet assistance, and email account setup.
  6. Issue library cards and guest user passes to computers
  7. Follow City and Department policies and procedures and the instructions of his or her supervisor
  8. Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and others (internally and externally) in order to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquiries, address issues, or resolve and/or report problems or complaints
  9. Use good judgment and make good decisions in matters related to the job
  10. Assist others; be helpful, cooperative and courteous, and demonstrate a good attitude in all dealings with the public, co-workers and others
  11. Report in a timely manner all issues, concerns and questions to the supervisor or others as appropriate in the chain of command
  12. Discuss matters affecting his/her job or performance with the Library Director
  13. Dress appropriately and in compliance with the City Policy
  14. Demonstrate initiative and diligence in the prompt and proper completion of all job duties, whether or not listed in this Job Description
  15. Safeguard City property and recognize and report needed repairs
  16. Work safely, follow safety rules and training, and maintain a clean, safe work environment
  17. Maintain confidentiality with regard to all City business
  18. Perform other duties as assigned
  19. Punctual, regular, on-site attendance is an essential job duty.




Requirements

Basic Requirements

The Circulation Attendant must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Satisfactory results of background and pre-employment screening checks, including physical exam
  2. Satisfactory credit history
  3. Cash handling experience
  4. Familiarity with computers including basic Office Programs, a variety of email clients, Adobe Acrobat

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The Circulation Attendant must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Knowledge of basic arithmetic, spelling, and grammar;
  2. Skills in utilizing a personal computer, calculator, copier, fax, printer, and cash register;
  3. Ability to function effectively, professionally, and courteously with frequent interruptions and under pressure;
  4. Ability to adapt to a changing work environment rapidly and effectively;
  5. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  6. Ability to maintain clerical records;
  7. Ability to follow City and Department procedures, policies and supervisors’ directions;
  8. Good judgment and the ability to solve problems and assist co-workers and others with solutions to problems;
  9. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the general public;
  10. Ability to perform all physical requirements of the job; and
  11. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and after-scheduled hours as needed.

Physical and Mental Requirements

In order to successfully achieve the goals of the Library, the Circulation Attendant must meet the following physical and mental requirements shown below with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. The ability to understand, learn, remember and communicate information about the job;
  2. The ability to understand the meaning of and use and speak words understandably and effectively in the English language;
  3. Good visual acuity, and good hearing and listening abilities, that is, the Circulation Attendant must be able to see clearly and hear spoken words from co-workers, supervisors and others;
  4. Good motor coordination skills, that is, the Circulation Attendant must be able to coordinate his or her eyes, hands and fingers rapidly and accurately in order to handle precise movements such as typing and in response to visual, auditory and other stimuli;
  5. Make/use repetitive hand motions over an extended period, as when typing;
  6. Work effectively while under pressure and deadlines in order to respond to co-workers and the public; and
  7. Sit, stand, move around, bend, reach, stretch, push and pull and remain upright for extended periods of time in one room. Must be able to lift or move objects weighing as much as 25 pounds. The activities and the approximate amounts of time required per day/week for each are shown below. The approximations may not sum to one-hundred (100) percent:
  • Sitting - 15%
  • Bending - 25%
  • Standing - 50%
  • Walking - 35%
  • Kneeling - 25%
  • Lifting or moving objects of 25 pounds or less - 50%
  • Pushing or pulling - 25%
  • Reaching - 25%
  • Moving within the office environment - 95%
