SUMMARY

Storm Water Services Construction and Utilities Division is seeking a Summer 2026 intern.
The Construction and Utilities Division is primarily responsible for inspection and contract administration of Storm Water Projects, including various infrastructure and water quality improvement projects, for compliance with City, State, and Federal standards. This internship opportunity provides full-time employment during the summer and offers students real life job experiences.

Major Duties and Responsibilities May Include:

Construction and Utilities Division Intern duties may include the following:

  • Monitors work of private contractors on storm drainage projects for compliance with design criteria and construction standards
  • Oversee daily field operations and assist with field quality control purposes
  • Documents daily project activity and progress; measures and documents quantities of work completed for contractor pay requests
  • Reviews engineering design plans for constructability and compliance with contract requirements
  • Assists with coordination of utility meetings and performs site inspections for plan reviews when necessary
  • Assists inspectors, supervisors, project managers, and other senior managers in effectively finishing tasks related to project construction
  • Work cooperatively with external/internal project designers, private utility representatives, project managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Request utility locates using NC811
  • Attend all safety trainings and functions as required by the City, department, or division
  • Perform work in a safe manner in accordance with training, policies, and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to learn and apply City of Charlotte and NCDOT Standards and Specifications
  • Ability to learn and interpret stormwater project plans and construction photos to evaluate and document construction conditions and progress
  • Ability to work autonomously and be self-motivated to move projects forward
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, Adobe etc.
  • Strong creative and analytical skills
  • Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills
  • Must be comfortable traversing difficult terrain, structures, barriers, and various urban/rural conditions; encountering a variety of animals, insects, vegetation and weather; interacting with the public; and experiencing unforeseen conditions/situations in accessing drainage features within the right-of-way, public and private property

Preferred Qualifications: 

Pursuing a degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled as undergraduate college student in a Construction, Architecture, or Engineering program / related curriculum
  • A valid driver’s license and dependable transportation are required for traveling to and from the workplace, as well as between various facilities and job sites when needed

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
