Job Description:

IT Systems Administrator

Purpose:

Under moderate supervision, this position provides daily operations maintenance and support for highly reliable systems, using broad skills and current knowledge of information technology systems.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Monitors, troubleshoots, diagnoses, tests, evaluates, and makes recommendations to resolve system problems as well as define disaster recovery plans and develop network test plans.

  • Implements, configures, manages, administers, maintains, and monitors software and hardware to include systems, applications, middleware, servers, and storage.

  • Procures new software and hardware for systems, applications, middleware, servers, and storage technologies.

  • Evaluates system performance and health checks by implementing tuning improvements and performing system sizing estimates.

  • Contributes to the planning, forecasting, budgeting, procuring, and implementing new system hardware and software including the retirement of existing systems and components.

  • Assists with development of solution-based cost analysis.

  • Coordinates and communicates the installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems and components with customer departments and project teams.

  • Monitors services provided by vendors to ensure service levels are met.

  • Monitors and assists in management of equipment inventory.

  • Implements system security procedures and ensure compliance of all security policies, procedures and standards.

  • Knowledge of one or more areas of infrastructure and server technologies.

  • Knowledge of networking/telephony operating systems and network/telephony monitoring and management applications.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of education from an accredited college or university in a field related to the job plus two (2) years of related experience.

  • Experience may substitute for education up to two (2) years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience complying with regulatory controls, i.e., North American Electric Reliability (NERC) regulations, Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),

  • Experience monitoring modern physical and virtual data center infrastructure (systems, applications, middleware, servers, storage, and backup).

  • Experience communicating, collaborating, and coordinating server and application infrastructure updates with the affected stakeholders.

  • Experience supporting server-related and site maintenance issues, including routine maintenance and patching.

  • Experience managing system backups and restore activities.

  • Experience managing Certificates within AppviewX.

  • Experience working with Power Plant operations and critical applications.


Other:

  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.


 

Notes to Candidate:

Austin Energy Data Center Operations seeks an IT Systems Administrator to support various systems in a modern, complex infrastructure. The administrator's duties include implementing, managing, and maintaining highly complex, secure, and reliable systems infrastructure. Documentation and troubleshooting of system components. This position requires on-call rotation to support 24-hour utility operations and travel between local sites to survey in support of the integrated Data Center Operation solutions.

The primary duties of the position:

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, diagnose, test, evaluate, and make recommendations to resolve system problems, define disaster recovery plans, and develop system test plans.

  • Implement, configure, manage, administer, maintain, and monitor software and hardware, including systems, applications, middleware, servers, storage, and backup.

  • Assist and monitor AppViewX Certificates and communicate changes as needed.

  • Evaluate system performance and health checks by implementing tuning improvements and performing system sizing estimates.

  • Coordinate and communicate systems and components’ installation, configuration, and maintenance with customer departments and project teams.

  • Monitor and assist in the management of equipment inventory with IT Infrastructure Teams.

  • Implement system security procedures and ensure compliance with all security policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Travel to multiple work locations and participate in on-call rotation within the 24-hour utility operations.

Pay Range: $68,660.00 - $85,830.00 annually

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40-hour work week).

  • Additional work hours may be required to support 24-hour Utility operations, including evenings, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and emergency closures.

  • Infrastructure team members are required to be onsite a minimum of twice a week.

Travel:

If you are selected for this position and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Standards, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.

WORK HOURS:

This position has been designated as critical for the City of Austin. Critical positions are necessary and vital and support activities that impact City or department operations. Work can be done while at a designated work site or while working at an alternate work location. Critical employees may be reassigned to another area to provide essential services to support any extraordinary situations or emergency conditions.

VETERAN INTERVIEW PREFERENCE:

This position requires a criminal background investigation and North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) clearance.
