A Brief Overview
Under the general supervision of the Lead, Chief, Supervisor, and/or Manager: process laboratory specimens, perform data entry, transport specimens, prepare reagents, prepare specimen batches for instrumentation, maintain equipment, and manage laboratory supplies. Must be a self-sufficient, independent worker; skilled problem-solver; and a CHOP ICARE and Service Standard champion.

What you will do

  • Specimen Processing
    • Assess specimen acceptability and integrity to meet laboratory requirements for testing
    • Triage, accession, process, and route specimens following established procedures
    • Store specimens according to laboratory-specific storage directives as needed
    • Retrieve stored specimens for additional processing as needed
  • Customer Service
    • Face-to-face
    • Guided by CHOP ICARE and Service Standards
    • Interfacing with laboratory staff, medical staff, medical courier, and vendors
    • Provide a collaborative experience
    • Diffuse anger or frustration, seek to provide solutions
    • Answer questions and direct to appropriate answers, resources, or subject matter experts

    • Proper phone etiquette following established procedures
    • Ensure a warm tone of voice

    • Call critical lab values to clinician
    • Specimen handling
    • Treat each specimen as a patient
    • Exhaust all options when problem-solving to avoid re-collection
    • Coworkers
    • Works collaboratively and effectively with co-workers and staff in order to resolve conflicts and meet departmental and institutional goals.
  • Equipment maintenance
    • Maintain and clean medical laboratory equipment
    • Engage senior laboratory team members or technical support as needed for troubleshooting
  • Inventory
    • Assists in monitoring of inventory control
    • Cycle Counting
    • Unpacking and restocking
  • Limited messenger service as required
    • Promptly delivers specimens or paperwork throughout the health care campus as required.
    • Promptly activates and executes the pneumatic tube downtime procedures as required
    • Is knowledgeable in the use of resources to identify transport temperatures for all specimens and ensure stability
  • Operational procedure manual
    • Regularly reviews operational procedure manuals
    • Maintains individual annual technical competency assessments
  • Reagent Preparation
    • Performs other duties as assigned

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required
  • Bachelor's Degree current enrollment in a bachelor's degree of Medical Laboratory Science or related science program - Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Training and competence in advanced Phlebotomy and/or Central Lab procedures
  • Staff training
  • Able to work within in a project team environment
  • Knowledge: basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and security
  • Technology skills: electronic mail, Microsoft Office applications, typing, internet software, Microsoft Windows
  • Other skills: active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking, speaking, complex problem solving, monitoring, time management, writing, active learning, coordination, judgment and decision making, service orientation, social perceptiveness.

SALARY RANGE:

$1.00 - $18.00 Hourly
