Job Description

Brings an expert perspective to patient care for behavioral and mental health within accepted practices, policies, and philosophy of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. This expert perspective provides both direct clinical care and support. Care aspects include assessment, clinical management, communication, crisis prevention, regulatory readiness, and evidence-based care practice. Proactively supports efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promotes a safe environment.

Experience

  • One year of psychiatric or behavioral health experience in the medical field

        -Or-

  • One year of experience as a clinical nurse in a medical inpatient/emergency department setting working with pediatric and adolescent patient populations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in nursing
  • 2-3 years of clinical nurse experience
  • Experience in the emergency room setting
  • Knowledge of normal/abnormal growth and development throughout the age continuum
  • Previous experience with crisis management and de-escalation techniques and strategies
  • Experience with and knowledge of the assessment, management and treatment of behavioral health patients

Education

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Certification Summary
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the single State of Georgia or Multi-State through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact
  • Completion of Marcus Crisis Prevention Program as a user within 90 days of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of employment

Job Responsibilities

Practice (Caring for the Patient)

  • Provide direct patient care in assessment, management, and treatment plan development for behavioral and mental health patients in crisis in the Emergency Department and other practice settings.
  • Collaborate with Emergency Department and appropriate practice settings in providing medical stabilization and treatment according to scope of practice and training.
  • Integrate values and language preferences into healthcare delivery through a culturally sensitive process.
  • Utilize clinical decision support tools and resources to recognize issues, prioritize care, and modify plan of care as needed.
  • Ensure that appropriate documentation regarding care interventions, observation, medication administration, and monitoring is in place in accordance with policy and process identified.
  • Participate in transfer of care; communicate any special considerations, care priorities, and support needs as appropriate.
  • Comply and promote compliance with all behavioral health related policies and guidelines to protect patient, self, and others, including Children’s staff, from harm.
  • Provide patient and family education appropriate for identified learning needs.
  • Maintain patients’ rights, including the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.

DEVELOPMENT (Fostering Clinical Knowledge)

  • Participate in lifelong learning and incorporates new knowledge into nursing practice.
  • Provide basic education and knowledge support to the care team surrounding mental and behavioral health diagnoses and supportive interventions.
  • Maintain professional records and participates in goal planning related to performance review and professional development.

ENGAGEMENT (Engaging and Leading Professionally)

  • Provide oversight and direction in treatment and interventions for the direct care team members caring for patients with behavioral and mental health concerns.
  • Lead the Code Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT) responses and debriefs for patient-related crises.
  • Share information and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to ensure quality care coordination.
  • Engage in ethical practices utilizing principles from The Code of Ethics for Nurses.
  • Maintain therapeutic and professional relationships with appropriate role boundaries.
  • Contribute to a supportive and healthy work environment.
  • Demonstrate support of shared leadership through awareness of initiatives and providing input.

OUTCOMES (Driving Excellent Results)

  • Integrate evidence and research findings into clinical judgement and nursing practice.
  • Participate in monitoring activities within work environment to maintain a culture of safety.
  • Identify and communicate hazards and errors.
  • Participate in quality and process improvement activities to improve patient outcome and workflows.
  • Ensure equipment is in working order to provide safe patient care.
  • Demonstrate commitment and flexibility through times of change.

PROFESSIONAL MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Complete orientation and initial assessment of competency successfully by determined due date.
  • Complete mandatory education and annual competency assessment requirements as defined by department and system by due date.
  • Achieve 75% of staff meetings.
