Summary:
The purpose of this position to assist a licensed physician by performing ophthalmic clinical duties and assisting with the needs of the unit, including preparing patients for clinic visits, examinations, and procedures by completing intake documentation, vital signs, height/weights and rooming; preparing and assisting in examinations/procedures. Activities performed are intended to support, supplement, and/or complement patient care provided by licensed personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists ophthalmologists in treatment and care of patients.
  • Escorts or transports patient to exam rooms, treatment rooms or other areas as directed.
  • Prepare patient for examination and treatment by Physician or other Provider; gather patient data regarding condition; take vital signs, height and weight and document this information in the medical record.
  • Obtain past medical history and history of current ocular complaints from patients.
  • Measures patients' glasses prescription (lensometry).
  • Tests ocular functions, including measuring and recording visual acuity, muscle balance, intra-ocular tension, and tonometry.
  • Prepares examination rooms by arranging sterile instruments on tray and stocks rooms with appropriate medical supplies. Disposes of medical waste. Cleans and maintains examination room equipment. Cleans and maintains examination rooms between patients.
  • Upon completion of additional education, perform certain advanced tasks at Physician or other Provider request and pursuant to physician delegation or standing orders. Limited to: eye drops, topical anesthetic (such as EMLA and Synera Patch), and immunization injections. Ophthalmic Assistants are not permitted to administer oral medications.
  • Maintains ophthalmic instruments by sterilizing instruments and cleaning exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms and replacing burned out bulbs and batteries; participating in monitoring for QC.
  • Provide patients and families pre-printed instructions and educational material, as directed by Physician or other Provider, including contact lens use and care.
  • Changes eye dressings and reinforces patients and/or caregivers in-home care and education.
  • Complete Home Health, DME, Title 19, and other Governmental forms that do not require assessment or clinical judgment.
  • May perform data gathering for prescription refills, pursuant to Physician delegation. Limited to: reviewing medications with patient, removal of refill request from Voicemail, verifying current prescription in EMR, and forwarding refill message to physician using EMR. May NOT accept orders for new medications or changes to medication prescription, i.e. dose, route, frequency.
  • Accept and enter verbal orders from Physician or other Provider for labs, procedures, and radiology test. May NOT accept verbal orders for new medications or changes to medication prescription, i.e. dose, route, frequency. May enter orders into EMR.
  • Provide normal lab, imaging and pathology results via phone or letter to patient and families at the request and direction of Physician or other Provider. The fact that a result is Normal must be documented in the Provider's result notes regarding the lab, radiology or pathology results. Ophthalmic Assistant may NOT answer patient or family questions about results or provide independent education or guidance regarding results.
  • ALL MEDICAL ACTS PERFORMED BY AN OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT ARE PURSUANT TO DELEGATION BY AND UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A PHYSICIAN. THE DELEGATING PHYSICIAN REMAINS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MEDICAL ACTS OF THE OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT PERFORMING THOSE ACTS.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 6 months experience in a patient care setting required
  • 6 months experience in an Ophthalmic patient care setting preferred
EDUCATION
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of either a Medical Assistant Program or an International Council of Accreditation (ICA) accepted training program at the Clinical Assistant (Ophthalmic Assistant) level preferred
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1/20 Life Support Course Requirement required
