The Chevron Engineering and Innovation Excellence Center (ENGINE) in Bengaluru India brings together the resources and expertise of the Chevron global network with talent in India to enhance agility and technological innovation to optimize solutions for the world’s current and future energy challenges.  As one of the leading energy providers worldwide, Chevron is involved in the production of crude oil and natural gas, manufacturing of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals, and additives, and the development of enabling technologies.

Chevron's vision is to be the global energy company most admired for its people, partnerships, and performance. With a clear purpose to develop affordable, reliable, ever-cleaner energy that enables human progress, we believe human ingenuity has the power to solve any challenge and overcome any obstacle. Meeting the world’s growing energy needs requires the pursuit of innovations and advancements that deliver a better future for all.

About the position

Chevron ENGINE has an exciting opportunity for a Process Development Engineer to join the ENGINE Innovation team; this role will be based in Chevron’s office in Bengaluru.

Chevron ENGINE supports global operations, and work hours are aligned to business needs. Standard working hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or 1:30 PM to 10:30 PM, Monday to Friday. These may evolve based on operational or business requirements.

This role involves performing process modelling and fluid flow modelling, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), to understand novel technology fundamentals, define uncertainties, and develop a technology scale-up plan. Scale-up support also includes pilot plant design and optimization, conceptual design for commercial plants, and occasionally preparing initial decision support documents. The role requires creativity and ingenuity to solve unique engineering challenges that arise from developing new and novel process technologies with little to no precedence for guidance. The role will focus on, but not necessarily be limited to, Chevron's lower carbon solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process modelling and development: Develop process models for describing and scaling up new and novel technologies. Determine functional requirements and potential uncertainties/risks for translating promising chemistry into continuous chemical processes.

  • Fluid flow modelling: Develop 1D to 3D fluid flow models, as appropriate, to solve flow and reaction problems in porous media, process equipment, reactors (fixed and fluidized beds) etc. The modelling can range from correlations to 3-D CFD.

  • Provide technical input and oversight for pilot plant start-up and operations, especially for new and novel continuous batch facilities. Responsible for ensuring pilot plant design and quality of information are adequate to transition to designing a commercial-size facility, thereby shortening the technology scale-up timeline.

  • Leverage a cross-functional group of Chevron experts, contractors, national laboratories, and universities to provide relevant and accurate information for the early phase decision support packages.

  • Support the development of Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) by generating relevant heat and material balances, collecting location-specific cost estimates, and working with subject matter experts to evaluate project alternatives and competing technologies.

About you

We know our greatest resource is the ingenuity, creativity and innovation of our people. Applications from motivated, talented individuals with a keen interest in the energy industry are encouraged.

To be considered for this role, applicants should have:

  • Masters/PhD in Chemical Engineering or related field

  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience (minimum 5+ years) with CFD modelling or process modelling. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in both.

  • Understanding of hydrotreating, hydrocracking and fluidized reactors considered a plus.

  • Experience with developing & reviewing process deliverables for large capital projects, process equipment sizing & selection, processes with non-Newtonian fluids or high solid content streams and water treatment & discharge systems (ideally for renewable fuel facilities).

  • Expertise in the use and application of CFD simulators (Ansys, OpenFOAM), process simulators (ProII, HYSYS) and other specialty software (HTRI, PipePhase, etc) to carry out flow modelling and process engineering tasks.

  • Proficient in managing stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and promoting collaboration with both internal and external partners.
