About this role

Overview

Researches, identifies, gathers, and documents the Cherokee Language articles which have been previously collected, documented or recorded at higher learning institutions, governmental entities, organizations, individual collections, and any other entities. Obtains and ensures all known historical Cherokee Language recordings and documents are gathered to be analyzed by the Cherokee Nation. Analyzes collected data, reads historical documents, and makes interpretations. Studies the history of language, the way of Cherokee Language has changed over time and across regions, and how the language has shaped Cherokee behavior and social life.


Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT 

Master’s degree in Education, Linguistics, Languages, Market Research, Translation, or a related field of study; no substitutions.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT 

At least six (6) years of experience in a related field is required. Experience in language learning environments or classroom learning is preferred.

 

COMPUTER SKILLS 

An individual should know Database software, Design software, Development software, Internet software, Spreadsheet software, and Word Processing software.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS 

Must possess a valid drivers’ license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Strong organizational and time-management skills, with a demonstrated ability to meet schedules and manage multiple deadlines while maintaining the highest quality of work. Excellent ability to maintain a clear overview of area languages and their documentation, while keeping track of the amassed data. Able to think strategically and to organize and prioritize work with strong attention to detail. Able to respond quickly to opportunities, changing priorities, and adapting to shifting duties while maintaining focus and following through. Able to work both independently and as part of a team. Self-motivated and disciplined.  Strong social skills are essential for doing fieldwork and pedagogical work with community members from different cultural backgrounds. Ability to quickly turn around projects. Ability to provide creative solutions to the unique linguistic needs of the Cherokee Language. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Working knowledge of the Cherokee Language and culture. Strong budget management skills.  Knowledge of instructional methodologies and ability to teach in a manner consistent with the values of the organization. Knowledge of lexicography software and experience with language research projects is preferred.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, hand, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and, ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
