AI Engineer

The AI Engineer will be a key contributor to the IRS Unified API (UAPI) initiative, focusing on building and deploying AI/ML solutions that integrate with modernized APIs and legacy systems. This role involves designing and implementing machine learning models, enabling AIdriven API development, and supporting workflows such as automated language conversion (COBOL to modern languages), model deployment, inference, and feedback loops. The engineer will collaborate with data and API teams to deliver secure, scalable, and production-ready AI capabilities aligned with IRS standards.

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for AI Engineer: $110-140K

Pay commensurate with experience.

AI Engineer Responsibilities Include: 

• AI/ML Solution Development: Design, build, and optimize machine learning models for tasks such as language conversion, code generation, error detection, and automated testing.
• Model Deployment & Integration: Deploy models into production environments using tools like AWS SageMaker, GCP Vertex AI, or custom APIs (FastAPI, TorchServe); ensure operational readiness and scalability.
• API Enablement for AI Workflows: Develop APIs that support model inference, feedback loops, and integration with IRS microservices; ensure compliance with REST/GraphQL/gRPC standards.
• MLOps & Automation: Implement CI/CD pipelines for ML workflows; manage model

 versioning, monitoring, and retraining using tools like MLflow, Docker, and Kubernetes.

• Data Collaboration: Work closely with data engineers to ensure high-quality datasets for training and inference; support feature engineering and data validation.
• Performance & Observability: Configure synthetic monitoring and alerts for deployed models and AI-enabled APIs using Datadog, Prometheus, or similar tools.
• Documentation & Governance: Produce clear documentation for models, APIs, and workflows; ensure alignment with IRS/Treasury IT governance and security standards.
• Innovation & Research: Explore and apply advanced techniques such as LLMs, generative AI, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to enhance IRS modernization efforts.

AI Engineer Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested: 

• U.S. Citizenship is required. Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearence and IRS suitability/Public Trust (candidates with an active IRS suitability/Public Trust are preferred)
• Bachelor degree strongly preferred; Computer Science or related technical degree preferred OR equivalent experience
• 3–5+ years in software or ML engineering with a proven track record of leading end-toend AI/ML projects and mentoring junior team members.
• Proficient in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow).
• Strong experience with NLP and LLMs.
• Hands-on with MLOps tools (MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Skilled in building and maintaining data pipelines for ML workflows.
• Experience deploying models to production using SageMaker, Vertex AI, or custom API frameworks (FastAPI, TorchServe).
• Preferred (Bonus):
  • Experience with LLMs, generative AI, RAG architectures.
  • Open-source contributions or domain expertise in finance, healthcare, or recommendation systems.
