JOB SUMMARY

The Airport Operations Specialist I is responsible for monitoring and coordinating airside and landside activities at Charleston International Airport, Mount Pleasant Regional Airport, Charleston Executive Airport, and Berkeley County Airport. This role involves responding to emergency situations, implementing contingency plans, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. The specialist will also perform a variety of inspections and oversee safety and security measures to maintain a safe, secure, and efficient airport environment. This position reports to Manager of Airport Operations.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Airside Operations:

  • Perform daily airfield inspections under FAA part 139, including lights, signs, markings, pavement, foreign object debris, security, perimeter fencing, fuel storage, fueling operations, construction activity, wildlife concerns, and daily inspection reports.
  • Inspect buildings for compliance with janitorial contracts and report findings to Janitorial management.
  • Document and report discrepancies in airfield and facilities inspections according to federal, state, and CRAA guidelines.
  • Coordinate response to airport emergencies, including periods of high stress.
  • Provide airline gate allocation through the RCC (Ramp Control Center).
  • Monitor the day-today airside safety in accordance with the Federal, State, and Local Regulations.
  • Provide Airfield Movement Area Training as required.

Security Operations:

  • Monitor and enforce day-to-day security at the airport facility in accordance with Federal, State, and Local Regulations.
  • Operate airport surveillance, access control, fire alarm, flight information, communications, and building management systems.
  • Monitor and distribute keys to ensure security record-keeping and coordination with tenants, employees, and contractors.
  • Identify safety and security violations, report suspicious activities, enforce parking regulations, and issue Notices of Violations and parking citations.
  • Conduct monthly fire alarm testing audits, perform monthly concessionaire audits, conduct daily perimeter checks, perform vehicle inspections as required, conduct vendor inspections as required, perform monthly duress alarm testing,
  • Quarterly change Jet Bridge codes.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Process documentation associated with department/division operations, including Architectural Drawings, Construction Plans, Charter Requests, Advisory Circulars, Wildlife Reports, and monthly Airline Operations Reports.
  • Prepare and complete various forms and reports, including NOTAMS, Ron Reports, Daily Airfield Inspection Reports, and Quarterly Janitorial Inspections.
  • Maintain computerized and hardcopy records, analyze safety regulations, and update local manuals according to government regulations.
  • Evaluate and coordinate response activities for all airport emergency situations, ensuring proper notifications are made.

Customer Service and Communication:

  • Monitors the passenger experience related to airline baggage delivery.
  • Proactively communicate baggage status updates to passengers.
  • Maintain a visible, active presence throughout the terminal to assist passengers, answer questions, and address concerns in real time
  • Identify, document, and report operational issues to supervisor.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Associate degree, or an equivalent technical diploma/certification.  
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a related field of work.
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.

Specific License or Certification Required:

  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform inspections and document findings accurately.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local aviation regulations.
  • Proficiency with various equipment and computer software.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and coordinate activities under stress.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to safety and compliance.

About Charleston Regional Aviation Authority

The Charleston County Aviation Authority (CCAA) owns and operates the Charleston International Airport (CHS), Charleston Executive Airport (JZI) on Johns Island and the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport (LRO). Chartered in 1970 by the State of South Carolina as a special purpose district, it is responsible for managing, operating and developing all public airports in the Charleston County Airport District. The Aviation Authority coordinates its activities with the Federal Aviation Administration and the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission.

The Aviation Authority District is governed by a 11-member board. The South Carolina House and Senate delegations representing Charleston County each nominate three members (approved by the governor) and one member is jointly appointed by the Charleston County Council and the Charleston City Council. The mayors of the City of Charleston, City of North Charleston and Town of Mount Pleasant, the chairman of Charleston County Council and the chairman and vice chairman of the Charleston County Legislative Delegation serve as ex-officio board members. The appointed members serve four-year terms.
