Your role

CBC is transforming the way it serves Canadians. We're more digital, more local and more ambitious than ever. And we're looking for a leader and strategist to inspire and guide our editorial teams through transformation and help reach and grow new audiences for CBC.

On Prince Edward Island, CBC is a powerhouse. People trust the journalism of the local CBC team and count on us for relevant information, context and a deep understanding of the communities that make up the province.  On all platforms, we want to ensure the public broadcaster remains central to people’s daily lives.

We are looking for a Managing Editor to lead the 40-employees of CBC PEI and be in charge of the journalism, programming and staffing at the station in Charlottetown.  The ideal candidate will ensure CBC is talking about what matters most to the public we serve and is sharing the stories in all the places people expect to find it: from mobile phones and connected TVs to radio, terrestrial television and YouTube.  You will work in collaboration with Radio-Canada management to support the needs of French Services staff who work at the station.

The Managing Editor will inspire, mentor, support and develop staff and ensure that all CBC Journalistic standards are met in the reporting and programming. The Managing Editor will guide the editorial leadership team of PEI with a focus on service, strong communication, inclusion, shared goals, accountability and results.  The leader will uphold CBC’s commitment to reflecting the diversity of the country, its cultural diversity and diversity of perspectives, and building meaningful relationships with new audiences.

Reporting to the Senior Managing Director of CBC Atlantic and Quebec, the Managing Editor will work with other leaders of the Atlantic Region and the rest of the country to further the vision, mandate and strategy of CBC News and the strategic goals of CBC.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Exceptional critical thinking skills.

  • An inclusive approach to leadership.

  • An understanding of the issues and priorities of the communities that make up PEI and a passion for sharing them as widely as possible, in the province and across the country.

  • An ability to connect easily with a wide range of personalities, perspectives and experiences.

  • A strategic approach to daily journalism, against established goals and priorities.

  • Confidence and experience with a variety of storytelling formats, including breaking news, features, enterprise journalism, current affairs programming as well as creative treatments for audio, video and digital publishing platforms.

  • Cultural competency, awareness of inequity and a demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity in the workplace.

  • Proven change management experience.

  • A commitment to continuous learning.

  • A creative problem solver with a sense of adventure and an eagerness to try new things.

  • A commitment to public interest journalism and public broadcasting.

Experience required:

  • Minimum of 5 years' related leadership experience, including experience in a newsroom.

  • A track record of guiding complex journalistic decision making.

  • Experience with the application of journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom setting.

  • An ongoing interest in and understanding of media trends as they apply to a multiplatform journalistic organization.

  • Proven ability to make decisions rapidly and frequently within tight deadlines.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be clear, concise, and precise on journalistic and  programming matters.

  • Experience leading a team during major breaking news events.

  • Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.

  • Experience hiring and supporting new staff in a journalism setting.

  • Ability to communicate in French and/or an Indigenous language is considered an asset.

  • Experience with community stakeholder engagement.

Tasks:

  • Provides strategically driven editorial leadership daily for all programs and projects.

  • Responsible for application of the CBC’s journalistic standards and practices.

  • Develops and executes strategy against goals to strengthen the local journalism and deepen community connections.

  • Creates a positive and inclusive work culture through feedback, coaching and development of staff.

  • Builds and maintains strong connections between the local team and colleagues across the country to the benefit of the CBC News division as a whole.

  • Builds and maintains strong connections with French Services in Atlantic Canada.

  • Works with Managing Editors and other leaders across the region and the country to achieve strategic goals.
