Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians

Your role:

CBC Ottawa is looking for an experienced and dynamic producer to join our assignment team.

Reporting to the senior producer of news, the successful candidate will be an editorial leader and an experienced mentor, someone who demonstrates sound editorial judgment and who thrives as part of a team in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom.

In this role, you will marshal our newsgathering editorial resources in the afternoon and evening, deciding what stories to cover, when and by whom. During your shift from 12:45 PM to 9:00PM, Mondays to Fridays, you will coordinate and collaborate with journalists working on all platforms – digital, radio, social and visuals – to ensure we are setting the news agenda for Ottawa and the surrounding area throughout the week.

You will be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of your decision-making, ensuring our news content across all platforms connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities. You will strive to broaden the range of perspectives and experiences reflected in our news content, giving consideration to underrepresented communities and younger audiences.

You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, are a strong planner and organizer, and are at ease with juggling multiple tasks and priorities at once. You care about the people you work with and have a recognized ability to coach and motivate others. You will work closely with and be part of a three person assignment team, that includes the morning assignment editor and weekend producer.

You will ensure that all our work adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and that it upholds our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.

This role requires full time on site presence.

Your responsibilities:

  • Organize news coverage across all platforms during afternoons and evenings, making decisions about story priorities and rollouts, allocating resources as appropriate, and ensuring plans are in place for the next morning.

  • Oversee all aspects of story development including assigning, researching, gathering, writing, editing and vetting across platforms, with specific responsibilities for radio news.

  • Provide fulsome handover notes and outlooks.

  • Work directly with the resources team.

  • Respond quickly to breaking news and developing stories.

  • Provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and meets our journalistic standards.

  • Ensure assignments and content choices resonate with residents of Ottawa and our coverage area and align with CBC’s strategic objectives to connect with and grow audiences.

  • Work closely with the other producers on the assignment desk (mornings, weekends) to ensure continuity, and collaborate with various producers across platforms and locations.

  • Provide feedback and coaching to journalists to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.

  • Assist with planning coverage for special projects and events.

Your profile:

  •  Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.

  • Strong journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.

  • Ability to manage and organize large volumes of fast-moving information and quickly redirect resources to meet priorities and objectives.

  • Knowledge of and experience in assigning and creating content for all platforms (digital, social, radio, television, streaming) as well as vetting, editing, fact-checking and packaging.

  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the demonstrated ability to motivate and coach teams, and encourage creativity.

  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Ottawa, eastern Ontario and western Quebec, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

  • A keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of five years of journalism experience.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
