At CBC News in Quebec, we are looking for two experienced multiplatform journalists to join our team as part of an expansion in communities across the country. 

 

We are hiring in these communities, under this recruitment:

Quebec:

1)Châteauguay/Montérégie: Based in Châteauguay, this journalist will cover a region that includes the South Shore suburbs, Kahnawà:ke, and more rural and agricultural areas towards the U.S. border.

 

2)Sept-Îles/North and Lower North Shore: Based in Sept-Îles, this journalist will cover a vast territory from Tadoussac to the Labrador border. 

 

These permanent roles are focused on broadening CBC’s news coverage in Canada, ensuring stories and voices from these communities are reflected in our journalism across digital, radio, social, streaming and TV.

 

In these roles, you will operate independently under the direction of the assignment desk in your regional station. As such, you’ll need to be someone with a lot of initiative, who is comfortable working solo to get things done, and is able to build collaborative relationships with your producers and teammates in the regional station.

 

You will put audience needs at the centre of your journalism, ensuring your work highlights a broad range of perspectives, experiences and points of view, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You will regularly find opportunities to meet new people and expand your network of contacts.

 

You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. 

 

This position may require you to work from home or from a shared office space. This position requires you to regularly travel to the areas you cover.

 

Tasks:

  • Keep up with current events by consulting various sources.
  • Establish and maintain links with different sources.

  • Propose and receive topics for news stories.

  • Research, gather, evaluate and verify all elements of the topics addressed.

  • Plan reports around the story to be told. Conduct interviews and assess their relevance. Direct video shoots. Direct recordings on the radio or for new media. Take photographs or direct photo shoots for new media. 

  • Listen to audio and view visuals. Select the appropriate clips. Provide information for the graphic illustration of the topics addressed.

  • Decide on story angles. Draft various documents (reports, titles, briefs, texts with or without clips, presentation documents, ticker headlines) in a style that suits the medium and update them to reflect current events. Adapt the content of information programs. Depending on the position, translate or adapt copy or interviews into the broadcast language.

  • Script and narrate reports.

  • Submit texts for approval.

  • Oversee the editing process. Retrieve and assemble audio and visual clips for television. Perform rough editing for radio. Prepare audio and visual elements for new media. 

  • Prepare live broadcasts. Propose questions and clips and suggest their order.

  • Deliver the news or reports on air.

  • Publish texts, reports as well as audio and visual elements on new media.

  • Inform newsroom coordinators of any event requiring immediate broadcasting or special treatment.

  • On request, review the texts of other journalists and contribute to their reports.

  • Provide host journalists with written information (notes, dispatch) during special programs.

  • Ensure the availability of the resources (studio, booth, technician) required to produce your reports.

  • Drive a news vehicle.

  • For new media, select and update relevant hyperlinks. File and archive website content. Help organize and participate in interactive activities (moderating talkbacks, chats, forums). Follow up on e-mails from readers.

  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of journalism experience or the equivalent.
  • Extensive general knowledge.

  • Excellent knowledge of current events.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Very good working knowledge of French.

  • Solid command of communication techniques specific to the medium (radio, television or new media) as well as interview techniques.

  • Valid driver’s licence.

  • Familiarity with CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Standards and Practice

 

Skills:

  • Initiative.
  • Comfortable on air.

  • Able to present a subject clearly and concisely.

  • Able to use electronic and computer tools with ease.

  • Excellent diction.

  • Able to analyze, synthesize and think critically.  

  • Able to work under pressure.
