Associate Producer ( English Services) (On-Site)

CBC Calgary is looking for an energetic, forward-thinking and creative Associate Producer to join our team working on The Eyeopener, Calgary's number one radio program.

You will take the program to air each day, including the production and/or post-production of the show and/or program segments. You have very strong radio production skills and you will have an abundance of original ideas and story pitches that reflect your desire to go beyond the regular news agenda and the standard buzz on social media. You play a key role in the morning crew, with significant influence for the sound of the program. 

The Associate Producer provides an important part of the program support for hosts and other technicians by lining up remotes and keeping equipment lists updated ahead of an event. They also provide technical support and monitor equipment for incoming broadcasts, songs, daily lineup for the morning news.

You understand the diverse and changing population of Calgary and Southern Alberta and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.  Representing and understanding diverse communities is a priority for CBC.

Work must comply with CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and program policies, standards and practices. There may be opportunity to coordinate the work of others and close cooperation with the program unit is essential.

Key tasks:

  • Take the live morning radio program to air
  • Contribute ideas for program content; participate in the preparation of program objectives.
  • Assist in developing program content, including writing, researching, and/or editing. Organize the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants; develop background, introduction, and line of questioning; conduct or arrange for any necessary research; and ensure the briefing of hosts. Maintain contact files.
  • Provide support for on-air personalities. 
  • Ensure listener feedback is turned around quickly to be reflected on the show.
  • Plan, coordinate and execute video treatments of 306 content
  • Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.

As required, perform the following tasks:

  • Select music, sound effects and/or actuality.
  • Produce program elements.
  • Edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of, audio and/or visual elements.
  • Write continuity texts; edit copy; edit and prepare announcements for broadcast or online posting.
  • Edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for a website using appropriate technologies.

Qualifications - External

We are looking for a candidate with the following: 

  • Two or more years’ relevant experience during which the candidate would gain exposure to journalism, computers and the technology of radio/television broadcasting and digital services.
  • Experience in booking interview guests, developing lines of questioning, writing focused introductions, and preparing and writing tape segments.
  • Capable of original and creative thought in the production of news for radio, TV and digital platforms, with demonstrated writing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; good team player.
  • Comfortable with the demands and needs of a daily radio morning show.
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to handle a variety of functions quickly and efficiently.
  • Ability to solve problems independently and in group discussions (openness to new ideas and approaches).
  • Ability to work early hours and overtime as required.
  • Understanding of the structure and workflow of CBC News and Current Affairs in regional centres, and ability to build and maintain strong relationships with counterparts in other centres.
  • Strong knowledge of Calgary and communities. 
  • Ability to go live on the air and interact with the host.
