Job Details

The Senior Medical Technologist performs a variety of routine and special clinical laboratory examinations and procedures in the specialties or subspecialties for which they are qualified, which may include, but is not limited to, the Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Serology, Coagulation, Urinalysis and Phlebotomy departments.  The Senior Medical Technologist exercises independent judgment and responsibility to provide data for the diagnosis, prevention or the treatment of disease or assessment of a medical condition.  The Senior Medical Technologist must possess competency in all three major sections of the laboratory (Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry).

Responsibilities:

  • Possesses competency in all three major sections of the laboratory Blood Bank, Hematology, and Chemistry.
  • Follows the laboratory’s established policies and procedures for proper specimen collection, including patient preparation (if applicable), labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation and storage of specimens.
  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test examinations.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance (i.e., specimen integrity issues) or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor/manager/lead tech/designee.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory established performance specifications.
  • Performs proficiency testing in accordance with established policies and procedures, treating proficiency testing samples in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Performs and records appropriate quality control procedures and results, performs and documents corrective action, if necessary, and notifies supervisor/manager/lead tech/designee of out-of-control/discrepant results immediately.
  • Reports all critical values in a timely manner and documents in the laboratory information system according to policy.
  • Ensures correct patient / specimen identification throughout the entire testing procedure.
  • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of the department where assigned (i.e., procedures, quality control, etc) and the department's relationship with the other areas of the laboratory.
  • Consults with appropriate personnel when test findings are abnormal or questionable.
  • Assists the supervisor/manager/lead tech/designee in complying with all Joint Commission, New York State Department of Health and Federal regulations.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related science from an accredited school
  • Licensed under the NYS Dept of Education as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist
  • Knowledge of hematology, chemistry, blood ban, and/or microbiology preferred
  • Hospital experience desired
  • Must work weekends and holidays as scheduled
  • Good oral and written communication skills essential.


Salary Range

USD $56.28 - USD $70.76 /Hr.



This range serves as a good faith estimate and actual pay will encompass a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience. The salary range or rate listed does not include any bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation that may be applicable to this job and it does not include the value of benefits.
