We are looking for a Sr Staff Accountant, Ship Operating Cost.  The Sr Staff Accountant, Ship Operating Cost is responsible for supporting the ship operating and lease accounting functions by ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with SOX and internal control requirements. This role involves participating in the month-end close process, preparing journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, and analyzing financial data to ensure accuracy and completeness.

 

The Sr Staff Accountant will work closely with the Manager, Ship Operating Cost and cross-functional teams across Holland America Line and Seabourn to gather information, resolve discrepancies, and deliver timely and accurate financial results. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively across teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in month-end close activities, including journal entry postings, as well as month-end review meetings, ensuring that financials are all in accordance with GAAP and in accordance with lease accounting standards where applicable.

  • Prepare and analyses timely reconciliations of balance sheet accounts. 

  • Participate in monthly variance analysis of Actual results to Plan and Forecast in accordance with published timelines and standards.

  • Complete quarterly lease survey in a timely and accurate manner, complete SOX testing, certify controls and processes, and provide supporting documentation to internal and external auditors within established timelines.

  • Continuously work to improve efficiency and effectiveness of related business processes, understand and address inherent compliance/control risks.

 

Knowledge & Skills:

  • This role will report directly to the Manager, Ship Operating Cost for Holland America Line and Seabourn and will be responsible for communicating with other departments (both Shoreside and Shipboard) and taking information provided and evaluating the results. The role will create journal entries to accurately record the financial results for both HAL and SBN. The role will also need to understand accounting concepts and be able to apply those concepts to journal entries and balance sheet reconciliation process, all while living out the company’s culture essentials.

  • The role involves researching, analyzing financial data for variance explanation, resolving discrepancies and providing meaningful financial information on ad-hoc inquiries to meet departmental objectives of financial analysis support.

  • This role will work closely with the Manager, Ship Operating Cost and cross-functional teams across Holland America Line and Seabourn (including Shoreside and Shipboard) to gather information, resolve discrepancies, and deliver timely and accurate financial results.

  • This role does not require leadership skills.

 

Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting, or related field (CPA preferred).

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience.

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel knowledge. 

  • Experience with Oracle or another enterprise level accounting system preferred.

  • Experience with Blackline preferred.

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Capable of effectively prioritizing and managing multiple projects.

  • Candidate must possess the ability to work with minimal supervision and have a take-charge personality.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.

  • Flexibility with regard to peak work times, particularly month end close.

  • 5 Years Accounting/Finance experience 

 

Travel:  No or very little travel likely

Work Conditions: Work primarily in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential.

Physical Demands: Must be able to remain in a stationary position at a desk and/or computer for extended periods of time.

 

This position is classified as “in-office.”  As an in-office role, it requires employees to work from a designated Holland office Tuesday through Thursday each week. Employees may work from their homes on Mondays and Fridays.

  • Base Salary Range: $136,200 to $183,900. The range is applicable for the labor market where the role is intended to be hired. Final base salary is directly related to each candidates' qualifications and experience uniquely.
