About this role

The Mate assists the Captain with docking and other navigational duties, maintains a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for passengers and crew, and ensures all areas onboard are organized and operational at one or more Carnival Corporation owned and operated global destination. The Mate supports daily vessel operations, helps enforce safety procedures and emergency protocols, and monitors equipment and deck maintenance. The Mate also projects a professional and friendly image, providing courteous service to guests and crew to ensure a positive and high-quality onboard experience.

1. Ship Operations & Passenger Safety:

  • Report to work on ship days by 05:30 A.M. and non-ship days at 08:00 A.M., or as instructed by the Captain
  • Always man gangways during boarding and disembarking
  • Monitor passengers on deck and in cabins during transit
  • Assist with crowd control and order of passengers
  • Assist handicapped/wheelchair users and secure mobility devices during transit
  • Participate in crew training and drills as required
  • Ensure safety gear is always worn (hard hat, steel-toe boots, life/work vest)

2. Vessel Maintenance – General Areas:

  • Clean and maintain main cabin, heads, glass, floors, walls, seats, mirrors, under cabinets, life jackets, fire stations, and first aid stations
  • Sweep, mop, and organize lower compartments and storage areas
  • Scrub outsides of Humphrey tanks and check access hatches for water and dirt
  • Maintain deck storage boxes, rubber mats, rafts, and fenders
  • Clean sides of hull, waterline, stern flair, and canvas weekly

3. Vessel Maintenance – Specialized Equipment:

  • Assist with crane operation: upkeep, rust removal, chipping, sanding, painting, greasing cables, and daily inspection
  • Follow safety procedures during crane operation and when offloading/onboarding pallets (use tagline at all times)
  • Maintain bow equipment: anchor, winch, life rings; grease cable; chip, prime, paint anchor chain; test anchor monthly
  • Maintain top deck: scrub pilot house, treat rust, paint, grease davits, check life rafts, clean rescue boats, wash canvas, polish horn

4. Wheelhouse & Operational Equipment Maintenance:

  • Dust and wipe instruments, clean windows, ceiling, light fixtures, walls, and stairways in wheelhouse
  • Sweep and clean stairways ensuring non-skid tape is intact
  • Assist engineer with machinery maintenance and greasing
  • Ensure all operational equipment is in proper working order

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School or GED is required, or equivalent experience is required; additional education in Hospitality or a related field is a plus 
  • Must have STCW 95 Certification/Certificate

SKILLS & SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Follows maritime laws and standards 
  • Strong problem-solving skills, conflict resolution and communication skills 
  • Team player 
  • Ability to make quick decisions in an emergency 
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures. 

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficient in English 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be physically fit. 
  • Ability to work in an outdoor environment as needed.
  • May need to stand for long periods of time.
  • May be requested to work a shift schedule while at any of the destinations.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to multitask effectively. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data entry and reporting tools.
  • Detail orientated with a proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to multi-task and think critically
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Strong planning and coordination skills, especially in handling multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
