The listed pay range or pay rate reflects compensation forfull-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) position. Actual compensation may differ depending on assigned hours and position status (e.g., part-time).

SUMMARY (BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB)

Provides, elicits, and gathers information to facilitate, expedite, and obtain payment from third party carriers and self paying patients. Performs collection and follow-up activity with insurance companies. Deals with patients by phone or in writing to investigate delayed, partial, or unpaid accounts. Completes necessary billing projects as assigned. Meets internal and external customer expectations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Bills appropriate insurance company or patient according to insurance requirements. Bills remaining balances to secondary insurances or patients as appropriate.
  • Posts payments to account upon receipt of explanation of benefits and files explanation of benefits statements according to departmental policy.
  • Ensures that proper payment has been received according to contract and reports variances to supervisor.
  • Adjusts account balances appropriately. Logs and notes accurately contract allowances, insurance write-offs, and courtesy discounts according to departmental policy.
  • Documents and reports declinations of insurance payments to supervisor timely.
  • Balances deposits for assigned accounts and deposits in bank according to departmental policy.
  • Maintains current knowledge of payer requirements through insurance manuals, bulletins, memoranda, phone calls, and questions to supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of team functions and specialized terminology of third party payers. Completes proper documentation of all activity in patient or insurance accounts.
  • Reviews all insurance information provided by supervisor to maintain current billing knowledge and documents and reports any discrepancies or declinations to supervisor.
  • Completes the required amount of work within a given time frame with minimal oversight. Demonstrates a willingness to adapt to changing departmental demands as new billing duties are required. Completes special assignments and projects with minimal supervision and consistently meets targets. Performs duties quickly and accurately showing attention to details and is sufficiently organized to produce quality work.
  • Maintains computer and paper departmental files and logs as directed.
  • Forwards necessary documentation with bills as directed by payers, attorneys, and auditing companies according to departmental and CH policy.
  • Answers patient and third party payer representative inquiries timely regarding accounts and completes proper documentation of all activity on each account. Answers inquiries by phone, mail, or in person in accordance with departmental standards for customer service.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or equivalency.

Experience: One year related experience or training.
