Summary

Maintains observation of cardiac monitor consoles

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below.  In addition, specific functions may change from time to time:

  • Assumes responsibility for monitoring cardiac rhythms

  • Performs telemetry monitoring duties

  • Alerts nurse to respond to alarms resulting from rhythm changes

  • Alerts nursing assistant or other competent staff member to respond to equipment or reception alarms (such as “leads off” or “low battery”)

  • Prints and documents strip assessment every four hours, on admission, during a code, upon request and as rhythms/rates change

  • Actively demonstrates responsibility concerning customer satisfaction, patient throughput and hospital functional capacity

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

Education and Formal Training

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

  • EKG certification preferred

  • Healthcare experience preferred (i.e. Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, MT) 

  • Medical terminology experience preferred

  • All internal and external applicants will be required to take a Dysrhythmia class and must successfully pass the required test within 60 days of employment with the following exception:  Applicants with EKG certification or previous MT experience will be provided the option to take and pass the Dysrhythmia test in lieu of taking the class.  Successful passing of the test will allow the MT to be exempt from the requirement to take the class initial class.  All employees will be required to successfully pass the advanced dysrhythmia test every 6 months (April and October each year)

Work Experience

  • Prior monitor technician experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills 

  • Verbal and written skills required 

  • Remains calm under emergency situations

Physical Requirements

  • Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs 

  • Visual acuity for observation of patients 

  • Long periods of sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting 

  • May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
