About this role

1) Cardiology Service responsibilities:

      i) The position will provide Cardiology services as required for patients as assigned, all without regard to source of payment. All such Services shall be performed consistent with all applicable legal requirements and in a professional and cooperative manner.

      ii) The position will assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Cardiology and related services provided.

      iii) The position will be responsible for obtaining and coordinating the following general items: history and physical, laboratory results, charting of clinical findings, admissions orders, nursing instructions and other required elements.

      iv) The position will work closely and cooperatively with the Hospital, the Cardiologists, and other staff across all of the Cape Cod Healthcare system.

      v) The position will return calls to patients and additional personnel on a timely basis. Place timely calls to patients and additional personnel as needed for ancillary test results, to order follow-up tests, and/or to initiate treatment orders, etc.

      vi) The position will be immediately available to nurses and other staff for questions and problems relating to patients during the course of their Hospital treatment (whether inpatient or outpatient) as well as on admission and discharge related matters.

      vii) The position will assist in family liaison.

2) Medical Treatment Care:

      i) The position will be responsible for many aspects of care under the supervision of the attending physician, including but not limited to: fluid and electrolyte management, nutrition, pain management, transfusion therapy, anticoagulation management, education and post-discharge planning.

     ii) Following procedures, manage and monitor arrhythmias, pacing, drug therapy, O - therapy, and other non-cardiac medications, under supervision of the attending physician.

     iii) The position will assist in the evaluation and management of clinical events such as fever, altered hemodynamics, CHF, pulmonary, complication, abrupt vessel closure, arrhythmias, access site complications and others.

     iv) The position will assist in transfers to and from the intensive care units.

3) Discharge Planning:

    i) The position will perform patient education regarding discharge including preventive care and risk factor reduction. He/she will write discharge orders, prescriptions and dictate discharge summaries in collaboration with the attending physician.

     ii) The position may act as a liaison between the attending Cardiologist and family members, and will schedule follow-up care as necessary, including VNA if needed.

4) Research and Education

    i) The position will be offered the opportunity to participate in aspects of research involving planning, performance, and analysis of data, and publication.

    ii) The position will complete 100 hours of continuing medical education necessary during each 2-year period of employment to maintain his/her PE certification Status. He/she must pass a National PE re-certification exam every six years. The PE is to be ACLS provider and is to be re-certified every two years.

    iii) The position will attend internal and external education meetings and read appropriate professional journals in order to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence.

    iv) The position will be encouraged to advance his/her medical and tactical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.

5) Oversight Responsibilities

    i) The position will supervise medical students (MD and/or physician assistant) who do clinical rotations in the Cardiology Department as directed by the attending physician.

    ii) The position will teach students, staff, nurses, technicians and cardiology fellows as instructed by the attending physician, particularly with regard to the evaluation, treatment and longitudinal care of patients with cardiovascular disease.


6) Must maintain a professional attitude toward patients and family members at all times and develop sound working relationships with other staff involved in patient care.

7) Consistently provides service excellence to all patients, family members, visitors, volunteers and co-workers.

8) Challenges current working practices, identifies process improvement opportunities and presents recommendations and solutions to management. Engages and commits to the organization’s culture of continuous improvement by actively participating, supporting, and promoting CCHC Pillars of Excellence.



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING (NP):

· (MSN) – Master of Science in Nursing · (CNP) - Currently licensed as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

· (DEA) – US Department of Justice DEA Registration (required if prescribing)

· (BLS) - Basic Life Support certification (obtain within 30 days of position start offered within)

· (ACLS) – Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (obtain within 30 days of position start, offered within)

· (Preferred) –Nurse Practitioner, Cardiology Board Certified by the National Commission on Certification of NP.

· (Preferred) - 3+ years’ Cardiovascular service-line experience


EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING (PA):

· (MPAS) - Masters from a program accredited by the ARC-PA · (PA) - Currently licensed as a Physician’s Assistant in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

· (DEA) – US Department of Justice DEA Registration (required if prescribing)

· (ACLS) – Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (obtain within 30 days of position start, offered within)

· (Preferred) - 3+ years’ Cardiovascular service-line experience
