Responsibilities

  • Surgical First Assistants assist physicians in surgery and may perform specific surgical tasks under “professional supervision”.
  • Significant surgical tasks include, but are not limited to: opening and closing surgical sites, exposure of the surgical site, harvesting grafts, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, implanting devices, and altering tissues.
  • Perform the CST role when not utilized in the First Assistant Role.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:  

  • Current Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or eligible for Certification. 
  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist School. Documentation of licensure and/or completion of technical training.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.

  • Current CST certification.

Preferred Job Requirements:  

  • 2 years of previous experience as a CST.
  • Pervious CST-FA experience (prefer minimum 2 years Cardio-Vascular).
  • Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the CST.
  • New employees who have completed and can document first assistant training or have maintained a current national First Assistant (FA) certification may work as an ST/FA following BSA policies and protocols.
