Job Summary:
Reporting to the Camp Director, the Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for managing Day Camp and specialized program activities during the summer months, including camper and staff supervision and evaluation at Camp Whitcomb/Mason. During spring, the Coordinator is responsible for assisting with Day Camp preparation, including camper and staff recruitment, planning, and prepping staff training. The Day Camp Coordinator supervises a seasonal program team of up to 35 staff during the summer months.
Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Plan, prepare, and implement activities and themed programming for Day Camp
- Provide quality program activities and experiences that promotes Camp values: .
- Promote and support camper-initiated and camper-lead activities. Foster an environment that offers choices, incorporates team building and promotes a sense of belonging and group identity for members.
- Monitor work assigned to staff, providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal.
Human Resource Management
- Schedule interviews, complete reference checks, conduct interviews and make recommendation to Camp Director for candidate selection during the spring on a part-time basis.
- Manages the summer staff according to the practices and policies developed by BGCGM.
- Manages shift schedules for staff.
- Hire, train supervise and evaluate counselor staff. Conduct weekly meetings with staff for timely communication and feedback.
- Participate in required trainings by the BGCGM, American Camp Association Standards, County, State and/or funder.
- Responsible for the compliance of training requirements/regulations of American Camp Association and State Licensing Codes ATCP.78 including ensuring documentation is completed
Financial Management and Development
- Manage budgets and purchasing for art, nature, ABL, garden, archery, Day Camp and camper/staff recruitment in coordination with Camp Director
Managing a Safe and Positive Environment
- Understand and follow the BGCGM policies and procedures to include but not limited to conduct of member policies, supervision of members policies, employee to member policies, member safety polices, child abuse and neglect policies, member health policies, transportation and field trips policies, the club safety/contingency plan, and the procedures for reporting incidents/accidents during program hours.
- Assure program safety and safety of staff, volunteers, visitors, members and daily operations. Communicate emergency procedures to all using facility.
- Ensure proper documentation of accidents and incidents related as trained
- Develop special programs and projects that highlight environmental education and BGCA Core programs to diverse groups primarily youth ages 6-18 years old.
- Supervise summer staff, including AmeriCorps members
- Develop a system to train, review and document skills mastery of summer staff
Program Planning and Management
- Organize, manage and supervise the daily operations of Day Camp and assist with Overnight Camp when applicable
- Lead, create and evaluate Program development and implementation for Day camp.
- Develop and evaluate lesson plans for summer camp programming
- Organize weekly supply purchasing for direct service programs in the summer
- Responsible for camper registration system including Camp Brain registration process for summer Day Camp
Community Collaboration and Partnerships
- Provide opportunities to engage and support the families of members in the spring and throughout the summer.
- Build reciprocal relationships with communities, schools, volunteers, and organizations to support program goals.
Camp Operation and Administration
- Adhere to all BGCGM administrative policies
- Maintain handbooks and communication for Day Camp
- Work within compliance of grants as awarded to Camp Whitcomb/Mason, such as the AmeriCorps grant.
Education and/or Certification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required or 5 years of experience directly related to youth programming and staff supervision
- Certifications required:
- First Aid and CPR/AED certification
- Certifications preferred:
- Lifeguard Certification
- ABEE Ropes Course Level 1 Certification
- NASP Archery Certification program
Skills and Experience:
- At least two years of experience directly related to youth programming and staff supervision
- Ability to keep youth ages 6-18 enthusiastically engaged
- Experience motivating, supporting and supervising young adults
- Highly organized with attention to detail
- Works effectively with families from a variety of diverse backgrounds
- Good written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with campers, parents, venders, donors and volunteers
- Understands basic benchmarks for member growth and development
- Ability to articulate program goals and understand how specific activities support those goals
- Understands confidentiality guidelines and protects children, youth, and family confidentiality
- Appreciates new ideas and learning opportunity

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to touch, pass materials, or feel. The employee is often required to stand and reach with hands and arms and occasionally do this on the high challenge course 12-40 feet in the air. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Employee must have the ability to work in all seasons of weather outside and walk up to .5 mile over uneven terrain. Capable of appropriate and sustained mental, emotional and social interactions in our constantly changing, youth-centered and community living camp setting.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but peaks high during all-camp functions and meals. Throughout the year the employee is working in spaces with and without air conditioning and working in close proximity to team members. During the summer months the Day Camp Manager may life in a private bedroom with a shared bathroom.
