Location: This position is full‑time (40 hours per week), Monday–Friday, in a typical office environment. This role is hybrid, based at 4101 Percival Rd., Columbia, SC.
Position Purpose: The Underwriting Manager leads daily underwriting operations and directs staff to meet organizational goals and compliance standards. This role is responsible for analyzing and managing the assigned line of business for profitability while developing and implementing underwriting policies and risk‑acceptability strategies.
What You’ll Do:
Implement and enforce underwriting policy and procedures with respect to technical risk analysis, risk selection standards, and pricing methodologies. Audits, monitors, and analyzes the underwriting and policyholder service activities for risk acceptability and adherence to company service and quality standards. Supervise, monitor, and direct the performance of the policy issuance and policyholder service activities. Preparing daily, weekly, and quarterly reports as required.
Responsible for the oversight of servicing carrier operations, primarily underwriting and policy administration. Manages and administers all aspects of the corporate risk management and insurance program, for all exposures with assigned line.
Fosters customer relations and resolves issues/problems with agents and prospective business partners. Establishes and maintains a positive, congenial working relationship with agents, policyholders, coworkers and others. Responsible for relationships with reinsurers, including monitoring of agreements, selecting/negotiating retentions, and facultative needs.
Establishing and maintaining appropriate processing procedures to ensure compliance with plan rules and regulations. Participates in formulation of underwriting policy and procedures, preparing manual revisions and updates, and sending out frequent e-mails to company personnel with updated information for assigned line of business.
Provide assistance to the director and other management as necessary on special projects.
To Qualify For This Position, You’ll Need The Following:
Required Work Experience: 7 years Underwriting. 2 years in a supervisory role OR equivalent military experience in grade E4 or above.
Required Education: Bachelor's
Degree Equivalency: 4 years job related work experience or Associate's and 2 years job related work experience

Required Skills and Abilities: Extensive knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills strong understanding of automated systems. Demonstrates efficient supervisory/motivational ability.
Required Software and Other Tools: Microsoft Office.

Preferred Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the reinsurance market. Ability to identify important insurance exposures and evaluate various alternatives for treating.
Preferred Software and Other Tools: Knowledge of presentation software. (salesforce)
Preferred Licenses and Certificates: Professional designation, certification, or association.
