This role is part of the Emerging Systems Business Unit, which will shape the future of our in-space infrastructure capabilities.

As an Embedded Software Developer III on the TeraWave team, you will be part of a talented group developing the architecture of a space-based networking system from the ground up. You will design and implement software for high-speed routing and switching systems that will form the backbone of our orbital communications network.
Your work will directly contribute to creating a multi-orbit satellite communications network that combines low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit satellites to deliver unprecedented connectivity capabilities worldwide.

  • This role will be onsite in Bay Area, CA. It is approved for a temporary remote work exception while our local site is developed

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design, develop, and test embedded software for Blue Origin’s TeraWave satellite communications network using C++ or Rust
  • Implement networking protocols including BGP, MPLS, and SRv6 for space-based applications
  • Develop software solutions for high-speed routing and switching in constrained space environments
  • Develop cyber security solutions for zero-trust architecture in space-based systems
  • Implement modern encryption standards for authentication and customer data protection
  • Optimize software performance for embedded systems with limited resources
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate software with hardware systems
  • Participate in code reviews and maintain high-quality software development practices
  • Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automated test frameworks
  • Apply Test-Driven Development (TDD) methodologies to ensure robust, reliable software
  • Contribute to software architecture decisions and technical documentation
  • Troubleshoot complex software issues in embedded networking systems

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in embedded software development
  • Strong proficiency in C++ or Rust programming languages
  • Demonstrated experience with object-oriented design, optimization, embedded engineering, and event-driven architecture
  • Knowledge of cyber security principles for zero-trust architecture relating to software architecture, operating systems, and system design
  • Experience with modern encryption standards for authentication and data protection
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and Test-Driven Development (TDD)
  • Familiarity with RTOS and bare-metal programming
  • Experience with Agile or Scaled Agile development methodologies
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Previous experience in aerospace, defense, or communications industries
  • Experience with IP, networking, and communications protocols including BGP, MPLS, SRv6, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, voice, and video
  • Experience with hardware/software co-design for embedded systems
  • Knowledge of space-based communications systems and constraints
  • Experience interfacing with FPGAs, secure boot, and high-speed serial buses
  • Background in developing safety-critical or high-reliability systems
  • Understanding of networking over constrained links and resource-limited environments
  • Experience with formal verification methods for critical software


 

Compensation Range for:

CA applicants is $164,652.00 - $230,512.80

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
