About this role

This application is for a 6-month student role from July - December 2026. Resume review begins in January 202.

Cell Culture Development works to create high quality, robust processes that are manufacturing-ready. We use carefully designed experiments to target areas for improvement identified from previous biological process knowledge/experience. We balance understanding/fundamental science with efficiency to make risk-based decisions that ensure safety/success of any process.

Members of this team have the opportunity to contribute directly to current challenges in the group. While performing diverse, hands-on experiments, an individual will learn about a wide variety of research areas, including bioprocess development, process analytical technology, and control strategy.

What You’ll Do:

This co-op is onsite and lab-based.  Perform and document a variety of functions in support of the development of new technologies for cell culture manufacturing processes of human therapeutic biomolecules.  Conduct laboratory cell culture experiments, such as setting up and running bioreactors and shake flasks, assisting in experimental design, troubleshooting, and analyzing data.  Candidates should expect to spend roughly half of their time performing bench-scale bioreactor experiments and half of their time handling and interpreting the generated data. Project examples include evaluation of a new technology application, assessment of a process specific hypothesis, development of a new lab test method, or application of engineering principles to bioreactor systems.

Who You Are:

  • Self-motivated and independent, yet team oriented.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques including aseptic operations, cell biology, biochemistry, analytical techniques, and bioreactor operations is a plus.
  • Proficient in working with PC based computer systems and relevant applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

To participate in the Biogen Internship or Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college, university or skills program/apprenticeship.

Education

Undergraduate in engineering or life sciences majors.
