The Physician Assistant (PA) provides comprehensive medical care to patients under the supervision of a licensed physician at BID-Plymouth. The PA practices in a variety of clinical settings, including but not limited to inpatient units, outpatient settings, emergency care areas, and the operating room.
Under the supervision of the Supervising Physician or designee, the PA may perform all services that are:
Within the PA’s demonstrated competence, as determined by the Supervising Physician and/or Chief PA
Within the scope of services for which appropriate supervision can be provided to ensure accepted standards of medical practice
Administer general anesthesia
Perform procedures involving ionizing radiation, except in emergency situations and only under the direct supervision of a licensed physician
Render formal medical opinions regarding procedures involving ionizing radiation
Major invasive procedures must be performed under written protocols developed by the Supervising Physician, Chief PA, and PA. Supervision levels include:
Tier 1: Supervising Physician/Chief PA present in the room
Tier 2: Supervising Physician/Chief PA present in the building
Tier 3: Supervising Physician/Chief PA available by telephone
Surgical consultations are conducted under written protocols that define supervision and communication requirements according to the Surgical Consultation Hierarchy:
Tier 1: All admission requests to the surgical service
Tier 2: All life-threatening consultations
Tier 3: PA discretion
Perform comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations
Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries
Order, perform, and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies
Formulate and implement treatment and therapeutic plans
Prescribe medications in compliance with state and hospital guidelines
Educate and counsel patients and families
Render emergency care
Facilitate referrals to appropriate physicians or agencies
Perform first and second assistant duties in surgery across all subspecialties
Assist with surgical procedures, including suturing, wound closure, dressing placement, drains, and wound vacs
Obtain informed consent and educate patients and families preoperatively
Perform and document surgical consultations and preoperative histories and physicals
Review all pertinent laboratory and imaging studies prior to surgery
Order all required preoperative labs, studies, medications, and preparations
Write postoperative orders in the recovery room
Communicate with families postoperatively
Perform postoperative evaluations, procedures, and documentation
Conduct daily hospital rounds as required
Write admission orders, progress notes, and discharge summaries
Perform all admission histories and physicals
Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions of hospitalized patients
Manage discharge planning, including prescriptions and patient instructions
Provide surgical coverage for postoperative patients on general wards and in critical care units
Remain available for inpatient consultations in the Emergency Department, ICU, and inpatient floors
Provide coverage for all surgical subspecialty patients admitted to BID-Plymouth
Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program
Current Massachusetts Physician Assistant license
This position requires:
Frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking, and lifting over 10 pounds
Occasional stair climbing, prolonged sitting, and lifting of 50–100 pounds
Constant use of hearing, vision, and speech
Frequent use of smell and touch
Frequent keyboard and telephone use
Sustained concentration and problem-solving ability
Pay Range:
$136,094.40 USD - $185,078.40 USDThe pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
