Position Summary:
The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and technological development and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1 To perform his/her duties under the general direction of the Chief Medical Scientist.
2 To perform all aspects of technical work to the highest standard.
3 To supervise and provide guidance and support to medical scientists and medical laboratory assistants in the performance of their duties.
4 To organise the technical programme so that work patterns are efficiently maintained.
5 To carry out routine inspections of laboratory equipment in his/her charge and to ensure that the equipment is properly maintained and kept in serviceable condition.
6 To collaborate with the Chief Medical Scientist in the maintenance of efficiency and the introduction of new methods in the laboratory.
7 To assist in implementing measures for the safety, health and welfare of all the staff.
8 To assist in the training of student medical scientists, on call personnel, junior medical staff and visiting workers as required.
9 To assist in maintaining the ISO15189 accredited status of the department.
10 To represent the Chief Medical Scientist at meetings when required.
11 To attend courses and meetings as appropriate to maintain up to date knowledge.
12 To perform any other duties as may be appropriate to the grade. As per MF-GEN-0098 contained in staff members training folder.

(b) Candidates must have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of suitability and management ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office.

As of 31st March 2021 registration with CORU is required in order to practice as a medical scientist in Ireland.
If an appointee has previously been employed in the Civil or Public Service and that appointee is entitled to or in receipt of a pension from the Civil or Public Service or where a Civil/ Public Service pension comes into payment during the appointee’s re-employment that pension will be subject to abatement in accordance with Section 52 of the Public Service Pensions (Single Scheme and other Provisions) Act 2012.
