JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant owns key components of the monthly close and financial reporting cycle, ensuring accurate, timely US GAAP financials for a regulated biomedical/primate facility. This role prepares and reviews journal entries, reconciliations, and analyses; supports cost accounting and inventory/COGS; maintains fixed assets and project accounting; and strengthens internal controls. The Senior Accountant partners cross-functionally (Veterinary, Husbandry, Behavior & Welfare, QA, Facilities/Construction, Client Services, HR/Payroll) to translate operational activity into clean, auditable numbers.
DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES
Month-End Close & Reporting
- Prepare and post complex journal entries (accruals, prepaids, allocations, revenue/COGS, payroll entries).
- Own assigned balance sheet reconciliations and flux analyses; resolve variances proactively.
- Compile monthly P&L/Balance Sheet packages with commentary for leadership.
Cost Accounting & Inventory
- Support standard costing and actuals analysis for feed, supplies, PPE, veterinary items, lab/processing, and facilities.
- Partner with Purchasing/Operations on GR/IR, pricing, and usage issues; monitor inventory adjustments and scrap.
- Prepare COGS roll-forwards and margin analyses.
Fixed Assets & Projects
- Maintain the fixed asset subledger (capitalization, CWIP, in-service, depreciation).
- Track facility/construction and equipment projects; ensure proper coding and close-out.
AP/AR & Revenue Support
- Provide escalation support to AP/AR for exceptions, 3-way match breaks, credit memos, and unbilled/unapplied items.
- Assist in revenue recognition checks against contracts/SOWs and delivery milestones.
Controls, Compliance & Audit
- Maintain internal controls and SOPs for key cycles (close, AP/PO, FA, payroll, revenue).
- Prepare schedules for external CPA reviews/audits and tax providers; support state/local filings as needed.
- Ensure documentation is audit-ready and SOX-sensible (if applicable).
Forecasting & Analytics
- Build/maintain run-rate models for major spend categories; support monthly reforecast and annual budget inputs.
- Develop ad-hoc analyses to inform pricing, client profitability, and operational decisions.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Act as a power user for the ERP/accounting system; drive automation of close tasks and reconciliations.
- Recommend process improvements that reduce cycle time and error rates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
- 4–6+ years progressive accounting experience with US GAAP; mix of public/private or regulated industry (biomed, pharma, CRO, healthcare, manufacturing) preferred.
- Experience with cost accounting, inventory, and fixed assets; preferred exposure to audits.
- CPA or CPA-track a plus.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Strong command of US GAAP, month-end close discipline, and balance sheet hygiene.
- Advanced Excel/Sheets (lookups, pivots, modeling); experience with ERP/Accounting systems (e.g., NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar).
- Detail-oriented, highly organized, with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Clear written and verbal communication; collaborative across finance and operations.
- Data integrity mindset: documentation that is complete and audit-ready.
- Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Primarily office-based; prolonged periods working at a computer.
- May occasionally lift 15 lb. (files, equipment).
- Occasional on-site walkthroughs of warehouse/facility areas for inventory or project reviews.
