Highlights:

Summary: The Operating Room Assistant shall is responsible to transport supplies, equipment, and patients, scrub on surgical cases for retraction purposes as assigned, and provide technical support services for Surgery and/or Anesthesia. This individual will assist with pulling cases, opening/setting up procedures, assisting with cleaning of OR rooms, and reprocessing sterile instruments. The Assistant is also responsible to assist with maintenance of supplies, equipment, carts, and patient care. This employee may also assist the Circulating Nurse with delegated duties. This position may have additional duties assigned that are within scope of the role. Education / Experience: High School diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of requirements for ORA II competencies regarding sterile technique, basic anatomy, and patient safety issues. Clinical experience desired. License / Certification: BLS required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Knowledge of proper body mechanics.
• Ability to communicate properly.
• Knowledge of how to avoid accidental exposure of self and other to harmful situations; when in the retractor holder role, must satisfactorily perform 5 each: open abdominal cases and 5 laparoscopic cases under the direct supervision of the Support Staff Supervisor, ST, and/or RN; documentation must be maintained.
• Must maintain competency as regards to patient safety and field visualization.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Position requires sitting for 5% of the workday and walking 70%, standing 20%, bending , stooping, reaching 5% of the workday.
There is frequent reaching, use of hands and repetitive action.
Requires occasional lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 150 pounds.
There is a continuous need for speaking with clear diction and hearing sensitivity in conversation either by phone or in person.
Continuous visual acuity at close and distant range.
Inside protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Minimal noise levels.
Much exposure to computer work.
Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock.
Some exposure to infectious disease while performing job-related tasks.
Some exposure to hazardous chemicals. Occasional exposure to radiation.
