About this role

The Principal Engineer 2 for the Structural Mechanics group will independently apply their extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices specific to stress analysis and structural design while working on major projects or multiple projects of moderate size but with complex scope/features. This individual uses advanced engineering analysis methods and techniques and will work both independently and with a group to meet the team’s key objectives.  This person is responsible for being a project lead as well as a mentor to less experienced engineers in the department.  This person will be expected to become a subject matter expert in multiple areas related to stress analysis and structural design.

  • Perform stress/structural design calculations for B&W equipment, including new build and retrofitting of existing equipment.

  • Calculate loads (dead, live, seismic, wind, pressure, thermal, static, transient, etc.), load distribution, and support/anchor locations for equipment.

  • Design all structural components related to boiler pressure parts and non-pressure parts, environmental equipment, and piping in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

  • Design for manufacturability and constructability.

  • Use of traditional hand calculations, commercially available design software including finite element analysis software, and internally developed programs for design work.

  • Assess shop and field issues related to B&W equipment and provide guidance and appropriate modifications as necessary to resolve the issues.

  • Prepare complete project sketches, calculations, and reports to be used by the project team.

  • Develop new techniques and/or improved processes or products.

  • Assign tasks to and direct supporting engineers, including offshore partner engineers.

  • Plan and coordinate detailed aspects of assigned engineering work.

  • Mentor and train less experienced engineers.

  • Represent Structural Mechanics in project meetings.

  • Perform complex engineering studies and occasionally provide oversight on routine engineering studies performed by less experienced engineers.

  • Lead interactions with external customers, A/E’s, vendors, and/or sublet engineers on specific assignments or in areas of expertise.

  • Develop knowledge to serve as an active Subject Matter Expert (SME) responding to technical inquiries.

  • Review scope, budgets, and schedules for assignments.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



  • 10+ years of experience required.

  • Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications.

  • Proficiency with Caesar II, STAAD, Mathcad, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Ansys Mechanical software preferred.

  • Working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, AISC code, and other applicable design codes.  Experience with international codes is a plus.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must be able to work both independently and in a group.

  • Must be comfortable communicating with both internal and external clients on behalf of B&W.

  • Must be able to function on multidisciplinary teams

  • Must be able to work on multiple projects at once.

  • Attention to quality and detail.

  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Experience in environmental equipment design preferred.
