We are seeking a collaborative and resourceful Senior Data Designer for our fast-paced Enterprise Data Services function at Aviva Canada. You will be working with the data, business, data science & other teams and help build enterprise level data model, standards, policies etc. You will be responsible for being a liaison between various business units and technical data teams. You'll be required to apply your depth of knowledge and expertise to all areas including requirements, documentation, data analysis, and data design. Further, you will be part of the data transformation initiatives to help Aviva build the right data mindset to enable our direct-to-consumer business, data science capabilities, and expand our digital footprint.

This role will be part of and a member of our Information Technology Enterprise Data Services Group. You'll be required to apply your depth of knowledge and expertise to all many areas including building data design frameworks, modeling and metadata integration frameworks, modeling frameworks, documentations and any other related data design capabilities. Aviva has embarked on an exciting journey to modernize, craft, and build a next generation of data platform to support the growing data needs for data engineering, analytics, and Data Science.

What you’ll do

  • Work with the ETL data engineering team & business intelligence team to understand requirements for the database design and model the data as per the needs of business.

  • Work with the ML engineering team and understand the needs for ML models and appropriately build the data models for their feature stores.

  • Be in charge of developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models and implementing RDBMS, operational data stores (ODS), data marts, JSON/XML schemas and data lakes schemas on target platforms (SQL/NoSQL).

  • Manage the extension of existing data architecture and optimize data query performance through best practices. The applicant must be capable of working both alone and cooperatively.

  • Collaborate with the development team to design and build the database model.

  • Work in collaboration with data engineering teams in documenting the source to target mappings.

  • Experience working with relational, dimensional and data vault data modeling techniques.

  • Understand the company’s data migration needs.

  • Work with the development team to implement the migration rules related to data.

  • Work with data scientists to understand feature engineering needs and design the required logical & physical data models in the underlying ecosystem

  • Help determine data security needs and work with security or infra teams to implement security solutions.

What you’ll bring

  • A bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or a related Information Technology area

  • Minimum 10 years’ of experience successfully leading Data modeling & design with expertise in building large-scale enterprise data models.

  • Solid grasp/experience with data technologies & tools (Snowflake, Hadoop, PostgreSQL, Informatica, DBT cloud, Airflow, AWS Glue etc.,)

  • Proficient in industry-standard data modelling methodologies

  • Excellent teamwork and communication abilities

  • Excellent consultative, facilitative, and consensus-building abilities

  • Proven expertise in developing relational databases in a corporate context.

  • Demonstrated expertise in developing models for Business Intelligence solutions

  • Excellent analytical, data profiling, and problem-solving abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication abilities

  • Advanced SQL knowledge

  • Thorough understanding of modelling methodology and procedures

  • Thorough understanding of facilitation and dispute resolution methods

  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence products

  • Outstanding knowledge and experience in ETL with any of the ETL tool product suite.

  • Experience establishing documentation standards frameworks for data quality, data governance, stewardship and metadata management.

  • Ability to foundationally understand complex business process driving technical systems.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Insurance knowledge an asset.

  • Knowledge of ER modeling, big data, enterprise data, and physical data models

  • Familiarity with data modeling software such as SAP PowerDesigner, Microsoft Visio, or ERWIN Data Modeler

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • The salary band for this position ranges from $150,000 to $200,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
