Mainframe Systems Programmer - CICS and MQ

Salary Range: 70K-80K

This role is responsible for the installation, configuration, administration, maintenance, and debugging of Mainframe CICS/Transaction Server software and tools, as well as WebSphere/MQ Series on z/OS.

The Senior Systems Programmer ensures that platform changes are executed in compliance with company processes and security standards while contributing to system improvements, product upgrades, and operational stability.
This position collaborates closely with technical teams, management, and clients to enhance service delivery and participates in an On‑Call rotation to provide expert-level support.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, update, maintain, and debug Mainframe CICS/Transaction Server software and tools, along with WebSphere/MQ Series for z/OS.
• Perform system changes within established company regulations, procedures, and corporate security standards.
• Support testing, implementation, and installation of new or enhanced systems and product upgrades.
• Attend meetings and coordinate with management, infrastructure teams, and clients to drive continuous service improvement.
• Diagnose and resolve complex CICS and MQ issues, including dump analysis, trace interpretation, performance optimization, and transaction troubleshooting.
• Provide expert on‑call support as part of a scheduled rotation. 

Must‑have Qualifications / Skills

CICS Expertise

• Deep knowledge and hands‑on experience with CICS Internals, CICS performance and tuning, CICS transaction debugging, and reading CICS traces.
• Experience with installation, maintenance, administration, configuration, and problem diagnosis of CICS/Transaction Server software and tools.
• Proficiency with CICS Universal Client or CTG, CAFC, CEMT Batch, EXCI, and CICS exits (Assembly Language).
• Experience with XPEDITER/CICS or INTERTEST/CICS for debugging.
• Experience with monitoring/automation tools such as Tivoli Omegamon/CICS XE or TMON.
• Experience with VPS/DRS Printing Solutions.
• Understanding of SMF/RMF usage in CICS environments.

MQ Expertise

• Installation, configuration, maintenance, and debugging of WebSphere/MQ for z/OS.
• Strong knowledge of MQ Series Internals, MQ clustering, MQ WAS, and WBI.
• Experience with MQ performance and tuning.
• Experience supporting high‑volume E‑commerce, EDI, or consumer‑facing MQ environments.
• Experience with message‑oriented middleware and file transfer solutions.
• Mainframe & System-Level Skills

• Experience with JES2/JES3, JCL, TSO/E, ISPF, SMP/E.
• Knowledge of IPCS for problem diagnosis.
• Understanding of UNIX System Services, HFS, and DFSMS storage concepts.
• Experience with VSAM file systems.
• Knowledge of SNA and TCP/IP networking basics.
• Knowledge of SAF and security interfaces for Top Secret, ACF2, or RACF.
• Assembly language experience for CICS & MQ exits.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or technical certification in Computer Science, or equivalent experience as a CICS/Transaction Server Systems Programmer.
• Verbal and written proficiency in English. 

Soft Skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication for documentation, troubleshooting, and collaboration.
• Ability to work under pressure in complex, high‑availability mainframe environments.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Collaborative team approach when working with technical teams, management, and clients.
• Proactive mindset toward service improvement and continuous learning.

Good‑to‑have Qualifications / Skills

• Experience with HTTP, JAVA J2EE, C#, ASP.NET, HTML, REXX, COBOL, DB2, ADABAS, IDMS.
• Additional exposure to UNIX, JAVA, WebSphere, CICSplex, or MQ Series technologies
