Working at Atlassian
Atlassians can choose where they work – whether in an office, from home, or a combination of the two. That way, Atlassians have more control over supporting their family, personal goals, and other priorities. We can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company. This is a remote position.
Atlassian builds products like Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Trello that millions of users and hundreds of thousands of organizations rely on to collaborate and ship software. Our customers trust us with their ideas, source code, configuration, and sensitive business workflows.
The Trust organization is responsible for the security, privacy, compliance, and anti‑abuse foundations that enable customers to use Atlassian products with confidence. We:
Define and enforce standards for AI trust, safety, and responsible use across Atlassian
Provide security and trust capabilities that product teams can build on
Protect Atlassian’s products and cloud infrastructure from abuse and malicious activity
Safeguard customer data and uphold our privacy and compliance commitments
Within Trust Engineering, we are building a new Trust AI & Data Engineering team to make AI a safe, effective, and reliable part of how we protect customers and our platform.
We are looking for a Senior Principal Software Engineer (P70) to define what “AI‑powered trust and safety” means at Atlassian and to lead the application of AI for Trust & Safety. This is a net‑new, foundational role in a newly forming AI team inside Trust Engineering. Reporting to the Head of Trust Engineering, you will help shape the new team's charter and technical strategy, architecture, culture, and mentor engineers.
Think of this role as building the AI platform within Trust & Safety. You will:
Own the Applied AI Roadmap for Trust & Safety
Architect the systems for AI‑driven trust workflows
Build and integrate LLMs and AI services into production systems
Define and implement guardrails, evaluations, and monitoring to keep AI‑powered systems safe and accountable
Build the data pipelines, APIs, and tooling that make AI practical, observable, and cost‑efficient in production
Optimize cloud infrastructure costs and build tooling to manage AI/data spending at scale
Collaborate with teams across Atlassian to improve our AI Trust & Safety posture
The Senior Principal Software Engineer will partner closely with AI, security, abuse, privacy, and compliance stakeholders to understand their hardest problems and deliver AI‑native workflows in incremental loops, always anchored in measurable trust and safety outcomes.
12+ years of industry experience in software engineering, with a strong track record of building and operating production systems at scale.
Strong proficiency in Python and at least one of Go or Java, with the ability to write mature, production‑quality code.
Demonstrated applied AI experience in production, such as:
Integrating foundation models (LLMs or other generative models) into products or internal tools
Designing and operating agentic or workflow‑orchestration systems that call multiple tools and services
Building retrieval or context systems (e.g., vector databases, embeddings pipelines) for AI workflows
Hands‑on experience with cloud data and compute platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Databricks, Spark, SQL), and with designing data models and pipelines for AI‑driven applications.
Proven operational maturity: you’ve owned services end‑to‑end, handled incidents, and improved reliability, quality, and cost efficiency over time.
Strong communication and collaboration skills, including:
The ability to explain AI/ML concepts and tradeoffs to non‑technical stakeholders
A track record of influencing senior leaders and driving alignment across teams
Demonstrated success leading large, ambiguous, cross‑functional efforts from concept through to measurable impact.
Experience in or strong interest in security, privacy, anti-abuse, or trust & safety domains.
Foundational timing: Join as we form the Trust AI & Data Engineering team within Trust Engineering and help shape its charter, architecture, and culture.
Meaningful impact: Your work will directly affect how safely millions of users collaborate, share code, and run their businesses on Atlassian products.
Unique scope: This role combines a large technical scope (AI systems, platforms, data) with broad organizational influence across security, privacy, abuse, compliance, and Central AI.
Deep, evolving domain: AI trust & safety is a rapidly developing space. You’ll be at the forefront of defining best practices and standards—inside Atlassian and across the industry.
