Position Summary:

The Billing Operations Associate will primarily be responsible for performing billing processes, where you will play an essential role in the finance organization at athenahealth. Responsibilities include contract and order review, invoice creation and distribution, revenue review, customer care and financial reporting. This position is located in Chennai, IN, offered as a hybrid role balancing remote and onsite as needed. You will report to the Accounting Manager - Billing Operations.

About the Team:

The Billing Operations team handles the processing of all client invoices, and engages regularly with both internal and external clients. You will work closely with Sales/Sales Operations, Legal, Customer Success, IT, and the Finance team to drive best practices for athena’s Billing Operations team. Our goal is to ensure timely and accurate billing practices that support client satisfaction and the financial health of athena.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Process production billing activities ensuring invoicing and revenue recognition is complete, accurate, and in compliance with customer contracts as well as Sarbanes-Oxley controls
  • Review customer contracts for pricing guidance and any billing exceptions to ensure billing aligns with agreed terms
  • Process order activation and monthly client invoices to ensure accuracy of billing
  • Ensure proper controls are in place and adhered to
  • Prepare month end reporting related to billing accuracy, opportunity reviews & metrics
  • Work with product owner to suggest and implement workflow optimizations to continuously improve billing cycle process within our ERP environment
  • Participate in period end closing activities including Accounts Receivable and revenue account analysis and reconciliations
  • Prepare accrual journal entries, customer and transactional completeness checks, variance analysis, trending and associated reconciliations
  • Partner with customer care to research and resolve invoicing discrepancies in a timely manner

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Assist with revenue recognition, amendment processing and month end activities as needed
  • Participate on various billing projects as well as cross functional initiatives to drive process improvements as well as customer satisfaction by striving for zero billing errors
  • Execute on User Acceptance Testing to ensure completeness of tasks being worked on and validate acceptance criteria has been met for projects as needed
  • Establish relationships with external clients, Sales/Sales Operations, Customer Success, Legal, IT and Finance team
  • Develop, document and maintain departmental best practices and billing procedures
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to ensure continuity of business processes
  • Aid in training new team members on billing procedures
  • Assist with ad hoc billing projects and other duties as assigned by Manager of Billing Operations

Expected Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • Experience processing billing and accounts receivable transactions
  • Proficiency in SalesForce or Oracle is a strong plus

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Strong Organization skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills to interact with internal and external clients
  • Comprehensive sense of urgency and ability to execute efficiently on a variety of timelines and deadlines
