About AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical business and its innovative medicines are used by millions of patients worldwide! AstraZeneca Summer Internships introduce you to the world of ground-breaking drug development, embedding you in highly dedicated teams, committed to delivering life-changing medicines to patients. Our 10–12-week program is designed for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students. We offer exciting opportunities across Research & Development, Operations, and Enabling Units (Corporate functions).

Our internships immerse students in the pharmaceutical industry, allowing the opportunity to contribute to our diverse pipeline of medicines whether in the lab or outside of it. You will feel trusted and empowered to take on new challenges, but with all the help and guidance you need to succeed. This internship will help you develop essential skills, expand your knowledge, and build a network that will set you up for future success. You will be surrounded by curious, passionate, and open-minded professionals eager to learn and follow the science, fostering your growth in a truly collaborative and global team.

Job Title:
Quantitative Systems Pharmacology - Mathematical modelling of drug biodistribution in solid tumors
The objective of the project will be to assist in the development and testing of our platform model for MRI-informed modelling of drug penetration in solid tumors, which is an ongoing collaboration between the Systems Medicine and Integrated Bioanalysis teams (with some interest from the TCE clinical teams).

The goal of our tumor digital twin program is to use data extracted from non-invasive MRI imaging to parametrize transport properties of drugs (extravasation of large molecules from the vascular space into the interstitial space of the tumor) in spatial mathematical models of solid tumors, to optimize our translational capabilities for antibody-based cancer therapy (TCEs, ADCs), which are currently suboptimal.

We are in the process of setting up a proof-of-concept in vivo study in a mouse model, will will generate MRI data to calibrate the model, and the ex-vivo histological data toactually validate the model predictions.
We are seeking a candidate who can handle partial differential equations, spatial data and do some numerical processing in Python/Matlab and similar.
The internship will be mainly about refining all the software pipeline we are building to process data, and estimate parameters and run simulations

Accountabilities:
  • Review the relevant literature
  • Extract, and processing and visualizing data from MRI imaging and/or spatial transcriptomics.
  • Assist in the development/implementation of spatial mathematical models drug biodistribution in tumor
  • Report results and prepare presentations to communicate with relevant scientific teams within AZ

Essential:
  • Solid understanding, at advanced undergraduate level or above, of multivariate calculus and linear algebra;
  • Basic coding proficiency in at least one of the following: Python (preferred), Julia, Matlab, R, C/C++

Desirable:
  • Some previous exposure to numerical methods for partial differential equations (PDEs), for example diffusion, diffusion-reaction and advection-diffusion-reaction problems.
  • Some previous exposure to analysis of 3D spatial data.

Given the comparatively challenging nature of the subject matter we are looking for either a bright advanced undergraduate or master student.

AstraZeneca is where you can immerse yourself in groundbreaking work with real patient impact.

Trusted to work on important projects, you’ll have the independence to take on new challenges while receiving all the guidance you need to succeed. Our collaborative environment is designed to help you grow professionally and personally, surrounded by passionate individuals eager to make a difference.

Our mission is to build an inclusive and equitable environment. We want people to feel they belong at AstraZeneca, starting with the recruitment process. We welcome and consider applications from all qualified candidates, regardless of characteristics.
