ASRC Federal Communications is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator for our ISS2 contract supporting our Air Force customer. This position is located on Wake Island. It’s a rotational position in which the selected employee will work a schedule of 3 months on the island and on month off unpaid, Wake Island is 2,100 miles away from HNL. While working on-site housing is provided in the form of a dormitory facility.  All meals are furnished through the cafeteria. You are responsible for the flight from your home base to HNL.  Transportation to wake island is provided by government sponsored aircraft.  This is a negotiated union position.

Key Role: 

  • Operate various heavy equipment, including excavators, backhoes, and front-end loaders on environmental and construction job sites to haul, dump, spread, excavate, backfill, level, and grade various types of soil and stabilizing materials. 
  • Monitor the job site for hazards and challenge unauthorized personnel on job site and maintain a safe working environment. 
  • Maintain constant awareness of surroundings, including eye contact with ground personnel and recognize job site specific hazards. 
  • Assists in proper rigging/load securing methods/devices, and the proper utilization of such devices in accordance with OSHA and DOT standards during lifting, loading, and transportation operations. 
  • Maintain safe excavation areas to include benching, shoring, and barricading as necessary to allow. 
  • Grade gravel and dirt roads. 
  • Repairs road surfaces. 
  • Uses and maintains tools and equipment. Initiates or annotates various forms or reports as needed. 
  • Performs routine maintenance, servicing, and emergency repairs to equipment as required. 
  • Uses proper hand and arm signals to direct/spot other equipment operators. 
  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, and falling objects. 
  • Align machines, cutter heads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground, or position equipment following hand signals of other workers. 
  • Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, and materials using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, and related equipment. 
  • Operate tractors and bulldozers to perform such tasks as clearing land, mixing sludge, trimming backfills, and building/repairing roadways. 
  • Connect hydraulic hoses, belts, mechanical linkages, or power takeoff shafts to tractors. 
  • Select and fasten bulldozer blades or other attachments to tractors using hitches. 
  • Operate road watering, oiling, and rolling equipment, and street sealing equipment, such as chip spreaders. 
  • Drive tractor-trailer trucks to move equipment. 
  • Operate equipment to demolish and remove debris. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

    • Common safety practices and protective equipment used on a construction site. 
    • Ability to work cooperatively and safely with others on common projects. 
    • Use of hand and power tools commonly used in the construction trade. 
    • Understand and follow directions.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) 
  • Certified heavy equipment operator. 
  • Four (4) years' experience with heavy construction-type equipment 
  • Ability to understand, speak, read, and write English. 
  • Proficient operating skills - ability to finish road grade with a motor grader, ability to excavate and install mainline utilities (waterline, sewer line, and storm sewer) to specified line and grade, operate an excavator while using a trench box productively, read and interpret grade stakes, install finish grade with a dozer and manage a fill site while operating a dozer. 
  • Knowledge of construction, machines, and tools; including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance, and the practical application of engineering science/technology. 
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (Goggles, Hardhats, Safety Shoes, etc.) 
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record, 
  • Position requires frequent lifting, sitting, standing, stooping for prolonged periods of time, using hands/fingers requiring dexterity, should have good hand-eye coordination and motion control in coordination with handling tools, equipment and other related components. 
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds. 
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, physical, fingerprints, and drug screening.

 

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working on a military installation.
  • Previous experience working in a remote location.
