About this role

UT Health East Texas and the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine are seeking an energetic and dedicated Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our world-class Cardiovascular Surgery team. The APP will play a vital role in providing comprehensive care to patients across inpatient, outpatient, and operative settings — including first-assisting in robotic thoracic surgery.

About the Position:

  • 7 on 7 off
  • Manage the care of cardiovascular surgery patients in accordance with approved privileges and clinical protocols.
  • Collaborate with 3 Surgeons, 2 Nurse Practitioners, and a supportive staff
  • Collaborate with attending physicians to deliver safe, efficient, and compassionate care.
  • Perform daily hospital rounds, review labs and imaging, and manage clinical progress independently and in consultation with the attending.
  • Document daily inpatient progress notes and coordinate multidisciplinary discharge planning.
  • Participate in and lead quality-improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and experience.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative patient management and education.
  • Serve as first assist in Cardiovascular surgery cases — including robotic, minimally invasive, vein harvesting and open procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and national certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA).
  • Current licensure (or eligibility) to practice in the State of Texas.
  • Prior experience in cardiovascular surgery, or related surgical specialty preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to compassionate, evidence-based patient care and continuous learning.

About UT Tyler School of Medicine:

The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine is the first medical school in East Texas and the seventh in The University of Texas System. Its mission is to train future healthcare professionals to embrace responsibility for the unique needs of rural and hard-to-reach communities and populations, particularly those in East Texas.

The school offers a robust Graduate Medical Education program, with 20 residency and fellowship training programs, enabling graduates to gain specialized skills in areas such as family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, surgery, and anesthesia. Additionally, UT Tyler’s Master of Biotechnology program provides students with an interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes medical research and biotechnology innovation, preparing them for careers in medical research, diagnostics and therapeutic development.

Construction is currently underway on a five-story, 248,000-square-foot Medical Education Building (MEB) in Tyler’s Midtown District. Connected by a skybridge to UT Health Tyler, the MEB will support interdisciplinary education for medical students and resident training. It will also aid as part of a medical education program expansion throughout the UT Health East Texas Health System. The building is scheduled for completion in fall of 2025.
