Position Summary

The Director of Religious Education (DRE) leads and administers all parish religious education and faith formation programs. This includes children’s catechesis (Pre‑K–8), sacramental preparation, adult faith formation including OCIA, and family catechesis. The DRE ensures all programs reflect the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and follow archdiocesan guidelines.


 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Faith Formation & Program Leadership

  • Oversee curriculum for Pre‑K–8 religious education.
  • Direct sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation.
  • Maintain accurate records for enrollment, attendance, and sacraments.
  • Ensure compliance with parish and diocesan policies.

 

Catechist & Volunteer Coordination

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support catechists and volunteers.
  • Provide ongoing formation and resources to strengthen catechetical ministry.

 

Liturgy & Parish Engagement

  • Collaborate with the pastor and liturgy team on sacramental celebrations and parish events.
  • Encourage family participation in parish and liturgical life.

 

Adult Faith Formation

  • Develop and implement adult education opportunities, including OCIA.
  • Support ongoing spiritual growth for parish adults and families.

 

Communication & Outreach

  • Communicate regularly with parents, parishioners, and staff.
  • Prepare newsletters, promotional materials, and bulletin announcements.
  • Foster a welcoming and supportive environment for families and volunteers.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Prepare and manage the religious education budget.
  • Order and maintain educational materials and supplies.
  • Ensure all volunteers meet Safe Environment requirements.

 

Qualifications

  • Practicing Catholic in good standing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Theology, Religious Education, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Catechetical certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Strong knowledge of Catholic doctrine, sacraments, and Church teaching.
  • Experience in catechesis, teaching, or parish ministry preferred.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, organizational, and record‑keeping skills.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications and parish management tools.
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with discretion and pastoral sensitivity.

 

Working Conditions

  • Requires some evening and weekend hours.
  • May involve standing for extended periods and lifting light materials.
  • Must complete diocesan background check and Safe Environment training.
