About this role

Responsibilities

Be part of a fast-paced, high energy, team supporting Strategic Systems Programs Re-Entry Branch on the SLCM-N program as the Nuclear Surety Lead Engineer. This unique and challenging role requires a strong understanding of both DOE nuclear weapon systems and DoD delivery platforms. As the Nuclear Surety Lead Engineer, you will serve as a critical technical authority ensuring the safety, security, and reliability of strategic weapon systems. You will bridge the gap between high-level DoD requirements and complex engineering execution. This role is unique in its dual focus: providing deep technical expertise in Re-entry Systems and serving as a deputy to a government engineer. The successful candidate will serve as a key technical liaison, managing complex interfaces, ensuring system compatibility, and driving successful integration activities throughout the program lifecycle. This position will require the candidate to represent the Re-Entry Branch at various meetings and have a comprehensive understanding of how to lead and manage a project from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the integration of subsystems into a broader "System of Systems." You will identify, analyze, and resolve critical design issues and interface conflicts as they arise during the integration lifecycle.
  • Apply a comprehensive understanding of Nuclear Surety standards (AFMAN 91-118/119, DoDI 3150.02) across the entire weapon system to ensure all engineering designs meet stringent DoD certification requirements.
  • Lead engineering projects throughout their life cycle ensuring compliance with applicable government standards. This includes managing technical maturation through the Phase 6.X process (e.g., Phase 6.3 Development Engineering through Phase 6.6 Full Scale Production).
  • Act as the deputy to a government engineering lead, assisting them in all matters related to your assigned equities with the SP28 branch.
  • Interface directly with government customers (DOE and DoD) and external partners, presenting technical findings and building strong collaborative relationships.
  • Manage requirements for SLCM-N through the different acquisition phases and translate requirements to design needs.
  • Formulate Plan of Action and Milestones for projects and is able to collaborate with multiple stakeholders to ensure milestone accomplishments.
  • Conduct detailed system-level analysis, including performance modeling, trade studies, and risk assessments to identify and mitigate integration risks.
  • Lead working groups as a Navy Chair stand-in for SP28 government personnel or serve as the lead engineer responsible for advising the Navy chair on all matters pertaining to the working group assigned.
  • Act as a customer liaison representing the Re-Entry Branch at various meetings.
  • Develop and review documentation and supporting material for technical accuracy.
  • Engage in design reviews to ensure traceability of requirements and compliance.
  • Coordinate with multiple stakeholders across multiple organizations for work performance.
  • Be data and process driven with the ability to identify areas of concern and able to provide recommendations for overall improvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's (with 8-10 years of experience), Master's degree (with 6-8 years of experience), or PhD degree (with 3 - 5 years of experience) in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field. Education can be substituted for military service and subject matter expert knowledge on nuclear programs.
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a TS/SCI clearance.
  • Proven track record managing programs within the DoD 5000.02 framework and the Phase 6.X joint lifecycle.
  • Strong background in Systems Integration, including resolving hardware/software interface issues in a "System of Systems" environment.
  • Exceptional ability to translate complex technical data into actionable executive briefings.
  • A passion for learning, helping others, sharing team knowledge, and contributing value to the mission in any way possible.

Desired:

  • Prior Submarine Navy Officer.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and chair formal working groups with external stakeholders (DOE, NNSA, AFNWC).
  • SSP Experience.
  • Willingness to learn and become a subject matter expert with various system engineering tools.
