Role: Medical Supply Technician 

Location: Robley Rex VA Medical Center, 800 Zorn Avenue, Louisville, KY 40206

Positions Requested: Medical Supply Technicians

Compensation: $18.50/hr plus $5.09 for H&W

 

Shift Requirements:

  • Shifts include 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM or 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM EST, excluding federal holidays.

  • Technicians will work rotational shifts, including weekends, following schedules such as:

    • Rotation A: Monday–Tuesday; Thursday–Saturday (off Wednesday)

    • Rotation B: Monday–Wednesday; Friday–Saturday (off Thursday)

 


Position Details: 

The primary purpose of the temporary Medical Supply Technician positions is to ensure accurate distribution, handling, and management of sterile and non-sterile medical supplies across all areas serviced by the Logistics department at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center. Technicians will support supply chain operations including scanning, receiving, storing, distributing, rotating, and maintaining medical and surgical supplies, implants, and related materials.

This role requires strong attention to detail, adherence to established policies and procedures, and proficiency with inventory management systems.


Primary Responsibilities

2. Scope of Work

Medical Supply Technicians will:

  • Distribute supplies and materials from secondary inventory points to all designated areas.

  • Scan, receive, and store supplies according to established procedures.

  • Maintain distribution of sterile and non‑sterile medical/surgical supplies.

  • Apply FIFO (First-In, First-Out) principles for rotating expendable supplies and implants.

  • Clean inventory areas and ensure proper hygiene standards.

  • Follow applicable policies, SOPs, VHA directives, manuals, and regulatory guidelines.

  • Utilize computerized systems for scanning, barcoding, and automated inventory tracking.

  • Monitor stock levels, adjust inventory as needed, and escalate unresolved issues.

  • Remove expired or compromised inventory and support hazard/recall processes.

  • Navigate varying environments including wards, ORs, clinics, warehouses, and storage areas.


3. Job Specifications & Requirements

a. Technical & Language Skills

  • Must be proficient in English (speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension).

  • Must possess basic mathematical problem‑solving skills.

  • Must have no criminal record.

b. Supply & Inventory Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of standard supply and inventory management procedures.

  • Ability to interpret and apply supply/inventory management policies, regulations, manuals, and guidelines.

  • Understanding of stock rotation, recall procedures, and hazard alerts.

  • Skill in identifying discrepancies and resolving supply‑related issues within established guidelines.

c. Computer & Software Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).

  • Experience using automated inventory systems, barcode scanners, and data-entry tools.

d. Guidelines & Decision-Making

  • Must understand and apply VHA directives, SOPs, policies, and manufacturer guidance.

  • Ability to research and interpret regulatory guidelines to support decision‑making.

  • Required to escalate complex or unresolved issues to appropriate supervisors.


4. Physical Requirements

  • Standing and walking for the full workday.

  • Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting of supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Pushing loaded carts exceeding 100 pounds.

  • With assistance, lifting items over 40 pounds.

  • Working in environments ranging from clean, climate‑controlled areas to hot, cold, or drafty conditions.

  • Navigating potential hazards such as trips, falls, cuts, or scrapes.


5. Work Environment

Work occurs throughout the medical center and catchment areas, including:

  • Wards and inpatient units

  • Clinics and exam areas

  • Operating rooms

  • Warehouses and storage buildings

  • Secondary inventory points

Technicians may encounter dust, infectious pollutants, or varying environmental conditions. A clean and orderly work environment must be maintained.


6. Performance Expectations

Technicians must:

  • Maintain accurate inventory data and adjust stock based on changing needs.

  • Ensure all documentation and system entries are complete and accurate.

  • Understand units of issue vs. units of purchase and recognize packaging discrepancies.

  • Work independently using judgment within established guidelines.

  • Monitor supply trends and respond to real‑time needs.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Educational Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
    (No additional formal education typically required for entry-level supply tech roles.)


2. Experience (Preferred but flexible)

  • 6 months–1 year of experience in supply, warehouse, logistics, material handling, or healthcare support preferred.

  • Experience using inventory systems, barcode scanners, or distribution systems is a plus.


3. Technical Skills

  • Ability to operate barcode scanners, automated inventory tools, and basic computer systems.

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to learn and apply inventory management systems.

  • Understanding of FIFO stock rotation, shelf-life management, and supply chain best practices.
