Position Overview

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – Inpatient provides direct patient care and clinical support services to Veterans admitted to Medical-Surgical and Inpatient Psychiatric units. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Contract CNA performs basic, appropriate, and effective nursing interventions in accordance with established facility policies, safety standards, and procedures.

The Contract CNA is expected to function with minimal direct supervision, refer deviations or problems beyond assigned duties to the professional RN, anticipate the needs of professional staff, and work collaboratively as a member of the interdisciplinary care team.

Work Schedule

  • Shift Length: 12-hour shifts

  • Day Shift: 7:30 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

  • Night Shift: 7:30 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.

  • Coverage Required: Weekdays, weekends, and federal holidays

  • Weekend Coverage: Alternating weekends preferred

Primary Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

  • Provide personal nursing care including feeding, ambulation, lifting, turning, repositioning, and hygiene care.

  • Assist patients using specialized equipment and those receiving oxygen or suction therapy.

  • Promote patient comfort, dignity, safety, and physical independence.

Observation & Monitoring

  • Obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respirations, pulse oximetry, height, weight, intake and output (I&O), and blood glucose per provider orders.

  • Monitor patients for changes in condition and report abnormalities immediately to the RN.

  • Recognize and report signs of medical emergencies such as diabetic or uremic coma, insulin shock, or gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

Diagnostic & Procedural Support

  • Assist physicians and nurses during diagnostic examinations and emergency procedures, including lumbar punctures, liver biopsies, and bone marrow examinations.

  • Assemble necessary equipment, position patients appropriately, and assist during procedures.

  • Collect, label, transport specimens to the laboratory, and monitor patients during and after procedures.

  • Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) as requested.

Treatment & Infection Control

  • Perform treatment procedures such as changing simple dressings.

  • Provide care to patients with communicable diseases and those requiring infection isolation.

  • Care for patients with oxygen delivery devices (nasal cannula, mask, venti-mask), chest therapy, postural drainage, and urinary catheters (condom and indwelling Foley).

  • Administer Basic Life Support (BLS) measures when required.

Safety, Environment of Care & Behavioral Observation

  • Conduct patient inventories upon admission and as needed, including contraband searches.

  • Perform ongoing evaluations of the environment of care to identify and report safety hazards.

  • Recognize potentially hazardous conditions and manage, observe, engage, and document disturbed behaviors, reporting findings promptly to the RN.

  • Provide 1:1 patient observation as a Patient Safety Partner, on or off the unit, as required.

Documentation & Communication

  • Verbally report patient information to the RN for inclusion in Nursing Care Plans.

  • Document vital signs, patient observations, and care provided in the patient’s medical record.

  • Assist with completion of patient admission histories.

Patient Education & Support

  • Supervise patients in self-care activities such as eating, dressing, and application of prosthetic devices or braces.

  • Instruct patients on general pre- and post-operative care as directed by nursing or medical staff.

Transport & Support Services

  • Escort and transport patients to and from appointments, procedures, and diagnostic studies as required.

  • Clean and maintain equipment used in oxygen and suction therapy and report equipment requiring repair.

Special Assignments

  • May be required to care for COVID-19 positive patients and Patients Under Investigation (PUI) in Medical-Surgical and Psychiatric settings.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Required

  • Current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification.

  • Must have GED or High School Diploma
  • Ability to perform patient care duties with minimal supervision by an RN.

  • Knowledge of patient safety standards, infection control practices, and basic nursing procedures.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
