The Opportunity
A Project Manager supervises and has budgetary authority for civil engineering projects. This includes acquiring resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and third-party contractors or consultants to deliver projects according to plan. A Project Manager is the principal project administrator and communications link between the firm and:
  • The Client
  • Sub-consultants
  • Local, Provincial, and Federal Regulatory agencies
  • Public Authorities, and
  • The General Construction Contractor.
In some cases, a Project Manager will report directly to the Branch Manager, and in other cases they will report directly to a Senior Project Manager.


Duties and Responsibilities
  • Be completely versed in the firm‐client contract for the project, and of the client's objectives. Satisfy client's goals.
  • Responsible for the entire project life cycle, from preliminary services through project implementation.
  • Manage all aspects associated with client relationship management and project service delivery. Ultimately responsible for ensuring the civil drawings and specifications meet established project criteria, applicable standards, and schedule objectives.
  • Manage and maintain a portfolio $600K - $2.0 million repeat and new sales annual revenue.
  • Establish documentation and administrative organization for the project.
  • Analyze the project scope, the client's RFP and firm's proposal with all internal and external Project Team members. Organize the work on the project and set forth the procedures to be employed in accomplishing the project.
  • Be the primary point-of contact for all incoming and outgoing project information. Ensure proper distribution of project information to all project team members and sub-consultants.
  • Attend project meetings, as necessary.
  • Provide leadership and help support all employees within the team.
  • Work closely with the Senior Project Manager (if applicable) to provide input on career path development and associated goals to achieve that development for all employees within the team.
  • Preparation of reports, proposals, and tender/bid submissions, budgets, project plans, and other supporting documentation, as required.
  • Review project costs and prepare monthly billings, ensuring that invoices are sent to the Client in a timely manner (typically within 30 days of the end of the work period).
  • Administer and oversee the project budget.
  • Administer and oversee the preparation of 3-month forecasting of work projections.
  • Proactively notify the Client of changes in project scope and prepare estimates for additional design fees.
  • Contract for the services of outside consultants when required.
  • Assign Billers to some projects and provide training to new Billers on invoicing procedures.
  • Follow-up with clients on proposals, invoices and tracking of Accounts Receivable.
  • Keep the Client, Branch Manager, and the Accounting Department informed on the status of the project.
  • Develop and monitor the Client's construction budget and schedule. Identify long lead items and proposed form of construction contract.
  • Participate in business development activities including new business opportunities, prospect contact identification and solicitation of new clients.
  • Attendance at recognized industry events to promote services provided by the company and to attract new clients.
  • Any other duties, as assigned.


Skills and Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 years of experience within the civil engineering field barring special exemption as granted.
  • Registered as either an AScT, C.E.T., C.Tech., P.Tech., P.L.Eng., or a P.Eng. within the Province of work (or approved equivalent).
  • A formal course in Project Management either as part of a Certificate or Diploma in Project Management curriculum (confirm locally available and eligible options with your Branch Manager) or as part of an Aplin Martin Certificate training program.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on several different projects and with multiple lead designers.
  • Knowledgeable in civil engineering design principles.
  • Knowledge in tender preparation and construction administration.
  • Ability to apply strong leadership skills to create a positive and effective team environment.
  • Strong customer service skills including business development and service delivery.
  • Requires a willingness to work a flexible schedule.
