ANDRITZ Fabrics and Rolls is seeking a forward-thinking intern to support an exploratory initiative focused on applying machine learning, optical inspection, and sensor technologies to improve in-process quality control and predictive maintenance in our cover machining operations. This internship will lay the groundwork for a multi-year transformation toward automated inspection and data-driven performance optimization. This internship is for May-August 2026.  

 

Education and Experience

To be successful, a candidate should possess: 

  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.  The ability to communicate effectively on various levels, verbally and in writing is essential
  • Must be able to work independently and within a group
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis (Excel, statistical tools, etc.)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Familiarity with machine learning, computer vision, and sensor technologies
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB, or similar tools for data analysis and prototyping 

 

Principal Duties

Major responsibilities are listed but not necessarily limited to the following duties: 

  • Conduct research on available AI, optical, laser, and sensor technologies applicable to real-time quality inspection and machine performance monitoring
  • Evaluate feasibility, practicality, and potential benefits of implementing these technologies in a manufacturing environment
  • Prototype a system for optical analysis of drilling and grooving quality using high-resolution camera feeds
  • Investigate sensor-based data collection (vibration, thermal, humidity) and explore AI-driven methods for performance trend analysis
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to define key variables and data gaps in current machining processes
  • Document findings and propose next steps for technology integration and long-term system development
