Job Description:

Summary:

The University Library seeks a creative, data-driven, and detail-oriented part-time Student Assistant to support user experience research, website redesign, data analysis, and workflow improvement initiatives. The position participates in evaluating website best practices, conducting usability studies, gathering and analyzing user feedback, and helping optimize and streamline internal processes. A key component of the role includes learning and applying basic workflow automation techniques to support efficiency and improve user and staff experiences.

The student will contribute to enhancing information architecture, navigation, accessibility, and overall user experience using data-informed design principles. The ideal candidate communicates clearly, demonstrates strong attention to detail, and can work both independently and collaboratively. Preferred skills include experience or interest in HTML, CSS, wireframing, Microsoft Excel, and data analytics. Familiarity with Canva, Google Analytics, SiteImprove, workflow automation tools (such as Power Automate), and AI platforms are beneficial. Federal Work-Study is encouraged but not required.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide basic troubleshooting and support the implementation of website best practices.

  • Help conduct usability studies, gather user feedback, and summarize findings.

  • Contribute to user experience (UX), user interface (UI), and graphic design tasks.

  • Participate in applying web and data analytics techniques, including data cleaning and work in Microsoft Excel.

  • Use tools such as AI platforms (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini), Canva, Google Analytics, and SiteImprove.

  • Support workflow optimization efforts and remain open to learning workflow automation tools (Power Automate).

  • Demonstrate an understanding of websites, information architecture, and effective navigation structures.

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with supervisors, team members, and other stakeholders.

  • Work collaboratively while exhibiting strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • Part-time.

  • 6 - 8 hours per week.

Salary Range:

  • $17.95 per hour.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Enrolled American University student in Spring 2026.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Close attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Interest in user experience, web usability, or information architecture.

  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel or other data tools.

  • Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn new tools and methods.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications:

  • This is an on-site position offered on a semester-by-semester basis.

  • Requires willingness to work Monday through Friday between 9 am and 6 pm.
