Job Summary

Responsible for providing assistance to support the accomplishment of welding related maintenance of plant equipment and facilities while concurrently participating in any prescribed training and/or qualifications identified as prerequisites for advancement to the position of Welder B. This is an entry level position.

Job Description

What You'll Do:

  • Maintain plant equipment while utilizing a working knowledge of hand tools and portable power tools and their correct usage.
  • Layout simple figures on flat surfaces and utilize a working knowledge of basic measuring tools such as rules, scales, straight edges, dividers, squares, and protractors.
  • Calculate areas, volumes, weights, etc. and comprehend moderately complex written material such as procedures, instructions, and technical manuals.
  • Interpret simple blueprints, diagrams, drawings, flow prints, etc. to maintain equipment in the plant.
  • Prepare and maintain records as required. This will include the accurate completion of job orders and writing new ones using the NPM system.
  • Obtain clearance permits and determine that the equipment to be worked on has been properly cleared and tagged (upon completion of the appropriate training).
  • Assist engineers and others with root cause determination of equipment/component failures.

What We're Looking For:

Welder C:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Work Experience:

  • Must have at least 3 years' experience where the incumbent worked successfully in the maintenance field and has a basic understanding of mechanical concepts or equivalent Nuclear Navy experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position. A review of Employment Testing information, Test-Taking Tips, and the MASS Practice Test may be helpful. A link to these materials may be found at AEP.com Careers by selecting Employment testing.
  • A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.
  • Perform any tasks for which qualified via prescribed training and/or qualification programs. Perform similar or less skilled work as assigned.
  • Assist employees of a higher classification.
  • Adhere to all radiological control work practices within the assigned area of responsibility and contamination control program requirements.
  • Identify and correct improper contamination practices as they occur.
  • Perform all duties and work with other employees in a safe manner, in compliance with all appropriate Company safety policies and rules.
  • Support and participate in Emergency Plan activities as assigned, in accordance with the procedures and policies applicable for the assigned role.
  • Work with or in the vicinity of hazardous materials.
  • Undertake other responsibilities as assigned by proper authority.

Welder B:

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED.

Work Experience:

  • Must have at least 1 and 1/2 years' experience as a Welder C. Must have satisfactorily performed the duties and completed satisfactorily any prescribed training and/or qualification of the Welder C position, or the equivalent.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test is required for this position.   • A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.
  • Operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, band saws, pedestal grinders and pipe threading machines.
  • Operate power and hand tools to assemble, disassemble and repair equipment such as piping systems, heat exchangers, heating boiler, steam traps, expansion joints, etc.
  • Perform work to apply proper rigging such as selecting proper hitches and accessory equipment, taking into account factors of load sway and the relation of lifting equipment to load on lifts. Be able to erect and secure blocking and cribbing to support loads.
  • Perform calculations to determine weight and center gravity so as to ensure rigging equipment is adequate prior to lifting. Operate Company vehicles as required which may include fork-lifts, man-lifts, etc.

Welder A:

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED plus formal related training, or equivalent education and experience.

Work Experience:

  • 30 months as Welder B, plus two and one-half years of related experience. Complete the training and experience requirement of Welder B.

Other Requirements:

  • Be able to read, interpret and work from diagrams/schematics.
  • Ability to lead and direct employees.
  • Obtain clearance permit and ensure that equipment to be worked on is properly cleared and tagged.
  • Prepare and maintain records, job orders, etc.
  • Assist in the training of other employees.
  • Support and participate in the Emergency Plan Organization, HAZMAT response organization, and Corrective Action Program activities as assigned, and in accordance with procedures and policies applicable for the assigned role.
  • Perform all duties, and work with others in a safe manner, in compliance with appropriate company safety policies and rules.
  • Assume responsibility for continuously upgrading of knowledge and skill.

Additional Information:

  • It is understood that in the performance of most nuclear generating plant duties there will be associated radiation exposure within the limits prescribed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
  • Education, experience, licensing & certification requirements of this position conform to ANSI N18.1 - 1971and ANSI/ANS-3.1-1993. Changes to these minimum requirements require review of ANSI N18.1-1971 or current governing document if revised AND Department/Section Manager concurrence.

Must establish & maintain a permanent residence within a 45-minute safe drive time to the D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant.
