Job Summary

Are you ready to shape the future of energy? Join American Electric Power’s Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) team and play a pivotal role in transforming how we meet growing electricity demands across our service territories. As a Resource Planning Analyst, you’ll be at the forefront of evaluating and optimizing the mix of power generation resources including renewables, battery energy storage systems (BESS), nuclear resources including small modular nuclear reactors, gas turbines, and emerging technologies that will power millions of homes and businesses.
In this role you will be actively engaged in planning for the energy portfolios of tomorrow by managing the preparation of Integrated Resource Plans by obtaining plan content from contributors outside of the Resource Planning organization and developing model input. Evaluating power supply alternatives and presenting findings to higher levels of management. Designing and performing other modeling related studies and analyses. Developing testimony and supporting witnesses in regulatory proceedings.
Participate in meetings with outside stakeholders when required by state specific rules in developing operating company resource plans.

Job Description

WHAT YOU'LL DO

This position is considered an expert in this area within the organization and will initiate, direct and complete power generation resource planning activities including the preparation of inputs to, and the analysis of outputs from, detailed production cost and resource optimization models and the associated analyses for existing and new generation resources, energy efficiency alternatives, fuel and purchased power projections used in Integrated Resource Planning filings, Request for Proposal (RFP) evaluations, corporate strategy discussions, Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) filings, and other regulatory proceedings.

  • Initiate and direct complex generation resource planning studies and analyses.
  • Complete power generation resource optimization and production cost modeling simulation studies for IRPs, RFPs, corporate strategy, and other purposes.
    • Possess an expert knowledge of modeling resources and techniques to be used in completing resource planning analyses and to implement process improvements.
    • Possess an expert knowledge of Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) rules, policies and procedures and ensure modeling efforts incorporate and reflect those requirements.
    • Possess an expert knowledge of various generation supply and demand side alternatives utilized in resource planning analyses, including modeling energy efficiency, demand response, and intermittent resources (renewables) for production costing and resource planning purposes.
  • Develop, prepare, guide and approve reports and analyses in support of regulatory reporting requirements, including Integrated Resource Plans and interrogatory responses.
  • Collaborate with Resource Planning key stakeholders, including state regulatory staff personnel, to address Integrated Resource Planning issues or concerns.
  • Communicate complex resource planning concepts, data and analyses to internal and external stakeholder groups as a part of the resource plan development process.
  • Participate as an AEP resource planning expert in RTO or reliability council working groups or tasks forces.
  • Develop methodologies for measuring or analyzing portfolio related risks (stochastics) and be able to apply and document risk analyses for resource planning purposes.
  • Develop and assist in report automation using the outputs of such models to meet specific company needs.
  • Develop testimony and support witnesses in regulatory proceedings.
  • Develop professional working relationships with Operating Company staff and AEPSC departments that are interacted with on a regular basis including Regulatory Services, Commercial Operations; Fuel, Emissions & Logistics; Engineering; Financial Forecasting; Finance; Environmental Services; and Strategic Policy Analysis.
  • Develop a working relationship with software technical support personnel to resolve modeling issues and make recommendations to enhance modeling performance.
  • Research and manage industry issues/developments that may impact resource planning or production costing studies and analyses.

Technical Skills and Tools

Candidates should demonstrate strong proficiency in:

  • Energy Planning Platforms (such as PLEXOS, Promod, Aurora) – developing and executing the optimization of energy resources
  • Microsoft Office product suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) – advanced data analysis and presentation development

  • Programming – Proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, MATLAB, SAS or SQL.

  • Familiarity with Power BI is preferred

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Resource Planning Analyst Senior: base salary = $87K - $108K

Education: Bachelor’s degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics)

Experience:

  • 6+ years of relevant experience or Masters degree + 4 years of relevant experience

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work occasional overtime (weekend/evenings) and/or work remotely 
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required. 

Resource Planning Analyst Principal: base salary = $99K - $127K

Education: Bachelor's degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics)

Experience:

  • Three years as a Resource Planning Analyst Sr OR nine (9) years of related resource planning experience (in addition to the experience identified above),
  • Specifically in generating plant operations or construction, renewable energy, energy efficiency, commercial operations, RTO operations, or transmission engineering/operations.
  • An advanced degree in an analytical field such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, or business (e.g. accounting, finance, economics) will be considered to be 2 years of relevant experience.
