Job Summary

What You'll Do:

Perform complex technical and specialized work in Radiological Control including implementing the station Radiation Protection Program.

Job Description

  • Develop an understanding of station systems and the proper documentation thereto, including radiological concerns and controls required to conduct periodic and special radiation, contamination and airborne radioactivity surveys, to assure Regulatory radiological limits are not violated.
  • Provide guidance to station personnel as to maintain personal dose As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA).
  • Perform calculations to support the calibration, operation and maintenance of radiological laboratory, portable, and plant process instrumentation. Issue, control and maintain dosimetry devices and the documentation as required to maintain the control of the station dose assessment devices.
  • Implement the station ALARA program by providing guidance to station personnel, installing / removing, shielding, and performing tool, equipment, and area decontamination, and writing Radiation Work Permits.
  • Report and document irregularities, abnormal conditions and program violations to an RP Supervisor or appropriate authority.
  • Operate equipment and instrumentation necessary to support station refueling.
  • Lead and direct work of other technicians in accordance with proper radiation protection standards and regulations, when requested to obtain satisfactory work.
  • Plan and complete scheduled activities on time and assist other personnel to complete their activities, including performing similar or less skilled work. Identify and correct obstacles to teamwork or communicate those items to supervisor if unable to correct.
  • Assist in the proper training and qualification of other employees in the thorough, safe, and timely completion of qualification cards or assigned tasks, as required.
  • Support and participate in the Emergency Plan Organization, HAZMAT response organization, and Corrective Action Program activities as assigned, and in accordance with procedures and policies applicable for the assigned role.

What We're Looking For:

  • HS Diploma or GED.

Work Experience:

  • Associate degree in Health Physics is preferred.
  • 4 years’ experience in Radiation Protection at a nuclear generating facility.
  • 1 year of related technical training.
  • Experience at this level is typically attained by progression through the Radiation Protection career path, including 2 years as Radiation Protection Technician.

Other Requirements:

  • Performance of duties may involve work in hazardous areas and possible radiation exposure within the limits prescribed by the NRC.
  • Education, experience, licensing & certification requirements of this position conform to ANSI N18.1 - 1971and ANSI/ANS-3.1-1993.

Additional Information:

  • Successful completion of the Plant Technician Selection System (TECH) test is required for this position. A review of Employment Testing Information, Test-Taking tips, and the TECH Practice Test may be helpful. A link to these materials may be found at AEP.com/Careers by selecting Employment testing. A physical abilities assessment is also required for this position.

Must establish & maintain a permanent residence within a 45-minute safe drive time to the D.C. Cook Nuclear Plant.

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M – Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
