About this role

Are you passionate about transforming how millions of customers and operators experience grocery technology at scale? Amazon's Worldwide Grocery Stores Technology (WWGST) organization is revolutionizing grocery operations across thousands of sites worldwide, and we're seeking a Principal Technical Program Manager to lead this transformation.

The Under the Roof Technology (UTRT) organization builds and owns the technology that powers grocery operations across all Amazon grocery formats—including Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh, Amazon Go physical stores, grocery fulfillment centers, quick commerce facilities, and same-day fulfillment centers. Our technology spans the complete operational lifecycle: from receiving and inventory management to cycle counting (ICQA), outbound fulfillment, robotics automation, food production, and foundational technologies that keep our sites running seamlessly.

We are in an exciting growth phase as Amazon expands grocery experiences to customers worldwide. As the Principal Technical Program Manager for UTRT, you will drive the most critical programs for our organization—leading large-scale technology transformations that fundamentally change how we operate these sites, often impacting 20-30+ technology teams simultaneously. You will be instrumental in driving generative AI innovation across operator-facing products, while also improving the productivity of our technical teams through AI-powered tools. This role is part of our core UTRT leadership team, with high visibility to VPs and Directors, and drives our critical organizational mechanisms that shape our strategic direction.

Key job responsibilities
- Lead and deliver large-scale technology transformation programs and SVP/VP level goals that fundamentally change how we operate 1000+ grocery sites worldwide, coordinating across 20+ engineering teams.
- Drive generative AI innovation across the organization by conceptualizing and leading teams to build AI-powered products for customers and operators, while implementing AI-based tools to improve technical team productivity.
- Serve as a core member of the UTRT leadership team, making strategic decisions on roadmap priorities, resource allocation, and organizational direction.
- Own and drive critical organizational mechanisms including quarterly business reviews, annual planning, and monthly technology program reviews.
- Develop and track program health metrics and KPIs to ensure successful delivery of complex, multi-year initiatives.
- Partner with engineering leaders, product managers, and senior stakeholders to decompose complex problems into actionable solutions that balance business needs with technical constraints.
- Anticipate bottlenecks, provide escalation management, and make high-judgment trade-offs between scope, quality, and timelines.
- Establish and continuously improve processes and mechanisms that enable the organization to scale efficiently.
- Drive operational excellence by ensuring post-launch improvements and sustainable long-term solutions.
- Balance innovation with technical debt management, ensuring system reliability and scalability.
- Mentor and develop other TPMs across the organization, influencing hiring decisions and raising the bar for technical program management.

A day in the life
You will spend your time conceptualizing and structuring large-scale technology transformation programs that span multiple teams and impact millions of customers and thousands of operators. You'll work closely with the UTRT leadership team to make critical decisions about organizational priorities, resource allocation, and strategic direction. Your day includes driving innovation by identifying opportunities to leverage generative AI—both for building operator-facing products and for improving the productivity of your technical teams.

You'll facilitate quarterly business reviews, lead monthly technology program reviews, and drive annual planning processes that shape the future of grocery under the roof technology at Amazon. You remain technically hands-on, diving deep into architectural decisions, system design trade-offs, and technical risks. You communicate clearly and compellingly with stakeholders at all levels—from engineers building the solutions to VPs and Directors making strategic decisions. You proactively identify risks, develop mitigation strategies, and aren't afraid to make difficult trade-off decisions or defend your position when necessary. You're passionate about operational excellence, continuously improving processes, and developing talent across the organization.
