The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858.  Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University.

The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs.  It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution.  

In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  • The Communications Office is responsible for managing relationships with various media outlets, assisting the AMS Executive in communication strategy, developing press releases, and be responsible for AMS public relations.
  • The Communications Deputy is to assist the Director in their duties and complete tasks as assigned.

Time Commitment, Eligibility and Remuneration

  • Part-time, volunteer term until April 30
  • 10 hrs a week
  • This is a volunteer position and is eligible for an honorarium.
  • The volunteer will be required to attend mandatory volunteer training in the Fall.
  • All AMS volunteers must be enrolled in at least 18.00 credit units (60 of a full course load as determined by one’s program) both at the time that they apply and for the duration of their term and have paid the full slate of AMS mandatory fees including the AMS Membership Fee. 

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Executive and Director to write press releases
  • Work with the Executive and Director to update the website
  • Complete graphics or make posts on social media as directed by the Director
  • Complete tasks and projects as assigned by the Director of Communications
  • Maintain regular office hours in the Communications Office
  • Attend all training sessions to become familiar with the department and adhere to the general operations of the department
  • Be productive, efficient and attentive in completing assigned tasks
  • Follow all AMS policy as outlined in the Volunteer Policy and Procedures Manual
  • Complete evaluations and attend evaluations meeting
  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings
