Job Description:

The incumbent provides technical expertise and performs a variety of tasks necessary to support Dental Programs.  Duties will include the responsibility for individualized assistance to students, administering tests and skills assessments, assisting in evaluations, planning and conducting skill demonstrations.  Consults with the Lab Technologist to ensure that sufficient inventories are available for student assignments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to current Algonquin College Clinic Asepsis Protocol (CAP) which follow the guiding principles of Infection Prevent and Control (IPAC) practices recommended by Ontario Public Health (see Core and Reprocessing modules).

  • Promote an educational environment that is free from sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination, as dictated by Algonquin College policies.

  • Promote a collaborative, safe and supportive learning environment by working within the Adult Learning model.

  • Model and encourage inclusive practices.

  • Ensure health and safety of the students and the clients in the shared care.

  • Act on issues that can adversely affect the health of students, clients, co-workers, family, and communities, as per established AC protocols

  • Participate fully in the agenda set out by the Course Section Information, along with updates provided by the course supervisor.

  • Competently demonstrate dental hygiene/dental assisting procedures, following the procedures as outlined in the Course Practicum Manual.

  • Participate in ongoing professional learning aimed at expanding competence in their area, including group calibration meetings.

  • Participate in dental program meetings.

  • Evaluate students’ skills, using outlined criteria and rubrics.

  • Provide written and verbal feedback.

  • Enter grades and detailed feedback comments in the electronic grading system.

  • Supervise students at an appropriate level and ensure tasks assigned to students are appropriate to their education, experience, skills and confidence and that the student is competent to perform.

  • Provide a safe environment by ensuring effective risk management.

  • Immediately discontinues student activities in which the students’ actions or deficient knowledge, skills or clinical reasoning places the student at risk.

  • Maintain professional accountability for students under their supervision.

  • Provide post-clinic feedback to the clinic for inclusion in the Post-Clinic report.

  • Report any issues that can adversely affect the health of students, clients, co-workers, family and communities.

  • Provide post-clinic feedback to the clinic manager and faculty.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum two (2) year Diploma/Degree in related field of study for specific program and/or possess relevant trade certification/licensing (Registered Dental Hygienist in good standing with College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO) with authorization to self-initiate);

  • Healing Arts Radiation Protection Act (HARP) Certified;

  • Hold a current certificate in CPR-C/HCP and First Aid;

  • Proof of completion of the Public Health of Ontario IPAC Core Competencies and Reprocessing modules;

  • Training in adult educational theory and methodology required.
